Assassin's Creed is a video game by Ubisoft. The game takes place during the Third Crusade, exact year 1191. The gamer plays as a member of the assassin sect Hashshashin known as Altaïr (??????, Arabic, "The flying" eagle), whose objective is to assassinate the nine historical figures who are propagating the Crusades, and the suffering of the people. As the gamer finds and kills these targets, their conspiracy is unveiled. The player will be able to travel through three cities, Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus.

The environment is completely interactive, from the people to the historically accurate cities. These cities are populated by many people and the way the player controls Altaïr affects how people around him react to his presence. For example, when going through a crowd, if the player lightly moves someone out of the way, it will not have a significant effect. However, if the player throws someone to the ground and kills them, the crowd may unite against him and he will then have to find a way out. Similarly, if the player shoves a person aside, they may shove him back. If he climbs walls, civilians will gather around, attracting unwanted attention from guards.

This game looks awesome! I thought there might aswell be an thread for it since there is one for Blue Dragon, which also looks awesome!

I also wanted to know what everyone else is thinking about this?

360 > PS3 version.
360 version will have a table tennis style mechanic, where if you can grab a ledge you'll get a light rumble from the pad.

This game is going to rock for one reason, its by the PoP: Sands of Time team.

Yup.

Why not just save yourself £400+ and get it on 360.
No point buying one just to play multiplatform games.

Neither did the xbox, platformers are dead to me, there might be the occasional one in 5 years that I'll play and like. Learn to spell "platformer" properly. That really seems to be the only genre that 360 really lacks in. Everything else is there in abundance.

I havnt heard about that. I kinda like the sound of it.
It depends with what though. If its a fight with fists and you go down in one, then it'd be really annoying. If it was with weapons like swords or crossbows or planks of wood while not with the fists then it would be cool.

While the PlayStation 3 and 360 versions of Assassin's Creed are virtually identical, Raymond did say that on the 360 the team is putting a special emphasis on achievements. The hardware also allows for improved threading, which will improve even further the crowd AI.

the action was trivial in SOT.. maybe you are thinking of the 2nd installment which was more about fighting (only played an hour of that). SOT was all about platforms. The time dagger was a brilliant idea for taking the frustration out of the genre. The wii port looks dreadful :(

My 360 games: Gears of War, Kameo, Viva Pinata, Oblivion, PGR3, Burnout Revenge, Hitman, Call of Duty 2, Crackdown, Dead Rising, Splinter Cell DA, Tomb Raider Legend, Dead or Alive 4, Lumines Live, Worms, Alien Hominid, Hexic HD, and Geometry Wars.

I'd say thats a pretty varied collection of games. As for platformers, or 'platfromvers' as ZeldaFreak knows them, Banjo 3 is out soon, and other than Ratchet and Clank, the Playstation has sod all really.

360 = Pwnage.

'Nuff said.

Anyway, on the subject of Assassins creed, its looking like a solid game with lots of things to do. I like the idea of him blending in as one of the Monks, then completely losing it and running around in the crowd. It looks as though they've really taken their time to create such immersive levels which, hopefully will play as well as they look.

Totally hyped for this.. Maybe not as much as Fable 2, but still its looking pretty good!

The best way to avoid their prying eyes is to be an anti-social climber. That means finding a quiet corner and using the game's much-talked about ability to clamber onto any ledge or surface. And while this freedom can feel daunting to gamers raised on set routes and corridors of certainty, the pad's rumble guides your hands. You see, not only will the jiggling of the controller help you pick out something to hang on to, the vibrations also become more intense as your grasp on that ridge weakens and your grip gives way, with lethal consequences.

Looks like the rumble is going to be quite a useful feature, I wonder what they will do for the PS3!

Kotaku have also just put up a new trailer which looks awesome!

http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200705/N07.0523.1653.37195.htm?Page=1

There shouldn't be any differences at all. We're sharing the exact same assets. The engines have the same capabilities. Both systems have different things going for them. With PLAYSTATION 3, currently, you can see maybe a slight difference in some of the textures. With Xbox 360 right now you may see a little bit smoother framerate, maybe a couple more frames per second right now. It's so negligible right now that unless you're sitting there looking at them both side by side, you're not going to see any difference. And that's our goal — to deliver the exact same experience on both of them.

Apparently Assassin's Creed won't take advantage of the SIXAXIS's motion controls and a Wii port is "totally out of the question." No news on the DS version I see.

As a general rule I'm vary wary of Ubishots, so I'll save judgment for when I have the game in my hands. But as far as I'm concerned, that can't come soon enough. This is my most anticipated game, and Jade Raymond has said it will be coming out this year — at a guess I'd say late November.

It's also known that the game isn't just heading straight to marks, there's also an investigative side to things. Pickpocketing, interrogation, and trailing people have been mentioned, so I'm hoping that there will be supplementary missions that you can do outside the major cities — the latest trailer showed a snippet of Altier swinging his sword whilst on his horse, so there might even be some mounted combat.

GameTrailers have a two-part interview up (http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=2581), so you might want to give that a look.

Kingdom of Heaven is my favourite film ever! Make sure you see the director's cut version though, its the version that Ridley Scott wanted to release before Fox decided the film was "too long of cinema audiences" and made him cut a lot out! The DC makes more sense than the theatrical release

I feel this game will be similar to RE4 in a certain way: it'll be hyped to the point of stupidity, and then once you've played it, you'll look back, and and think "Wow, all those trailers and stuff made it look rubbish compared to what it is!"

Also, a release of a demo (maybe the one shown late last year?) would not harm the hype in a negative way...

I'm over excited...

I mean, look at just the sword fighting!
It's so detailed, and so clever, like the way you can punch someone when you've deflected their attack, but left yourself open. Or the way Altiar spins after blocking a slash, and takes out the guy's legs.
And it's only a minor "nuts and bolts" part of the game!

The storyline's a bit risky though: you play an Arab out to kill influential Jewish/Christian figures.

Nothing particularly "wrong" about it, it's just like a normal game, but in today's climate a bit risky.

CONTEXT/STORY:

It's set in Jerusalem during the Crusades, where Saladin, the city's Islamic leader, is leading an attack against Richard the Great and his Christian invaders.

Saladin, not wanting his city taken from him, is at war fighting Richard, and leaves his city in the hands of generals - however these generals are corrupt and have made Jerusalem a mess.

The main character is Altaïr, a disgraced assassin, who has to bring Jerusalem back to the way Saladin left it. In doing so, he will regain his status as an assassin.

However, Altaïr discovers the generals aren't all they seem...

Without a doubt, probably the most ballsy game in recent years...

Now you may be like myself and be thinking what the hell was with the quite patchy looking stage demo of Assasins Creed?

Well according to cvg

CVG has heard that there was a very good reason the live demo of Assassin's Creed didn't go exactly to plan at Microsoft E3 press conference.

Following the demo of Ubisoft's new IP at the Microsoft conference last Tuesday many people came away under-whelmed. Looking back at the CVG blog of the conference we said, "Dead bodies are floating in the air, this looks a bit buggy and the demo's not going to plan. Jade laughs it off though so we'll forgive her." And to be fair we did.

Apparently the reason Jade Raymond and her accomplice had a few issues with the live playable demo (that was a bit buggy in places) was that the Montreal development studio had to rush to get something ready for the show as the request of Microsoft. This apparently happened because Bungie couldn't get a playable demo of Halo 3's single-player campaign ready to show in time.

We thought it was strange that there wasn't a live demo of the single-player portion from Bungie, especially as two members of the team were demoing the title behind closed hotel room doors.

Bungie instead showed a montage of footage from both single and multiplayer parts of the game. Take a look at that here.

The Halo 3 single player demo we witnessed in a hotel was cut short because the person in charge of the pad kept dying and couldn't finished the section in time. Even that seemed to be a little bit rushed.

All fingers are pointing to Microsoft putting the pressure on to get a live playable demo of the platform's biggest games up and running for the conference.

As far as all those rumours that say Assassin's Creed won't actually be that good, forget them. We played it and loved it. Look out for first-hand impressions soon.

Surely a "billion dollar franchise" would be able to produce a single player demo quicker then a game trying to establish itself AND out later than September. If they couldnt produce a demo so close to release...Id be worried!!

But at least it shows that there was a reason for the AC demo being a bit mad in places, for a while I thought my earlier suspicions of it being crap were true!!

From Gamerspot:

Ubisoft in Australia has confirmed that preorders for their upcoming action adventure game Assassin's Creed will begin this October, with all gamers who preorder receiving a limited-edition pack of the game.

The preorder pack will come in a collectible metal display box which features a numbered authenticity hologram. As well as the game, the pack will come with a bonus DVD which includes wallpapers, screensavers, Assassin's Creed videos, and "The Artefact"--a PC application which grants VIP access to exclusive information and content. An Assassin's Creed comic book will also be included.

Prices for the pack, however, will vary depending on which platform gamers decide to purchase for. PS3 owners will have to pay the most at A$119.95, Xbox 360 owners get the next most expensive at A$109.95, while PC owners get it for A$89.95.

This is the first and only limited edition I will ever get. I thought there was going to be one with a figure with it...hopefully there will be another on with!

And now that Mass Effect has been delayed for a couple weeks it means I have even more time to dedicate to this!

Tbh after seeing the combat in this game i'm shocked anyone is still interested.

The combat system looked smooth and fluid, enabling the character to pull of some brutal combos, switch weapons on the fly, and break enemies’ bones (he literally kicked a guy’s knee backwards). This fight is where the audience got into it the most; going “ooh” whenever a particularly awesome move was pulled off and applauding at the end.

I dunno, sound pretty awesome!

Didn't get the Bioshock limited edition, didn't get the Halo limited edition, won't get the Assassins Creed limited edition.

While a figure of Altair or a Big Daddy, or a Spartan Helmet, sound cool, it's an extra 5/10 quid for 5 minutes of reading the comic and admiring the figure. Bugger that.

In an interview with ProG, Assassin's Creed creative director Patrice Desilets, has revealed that both the Xbox360 and PS3 versions of the game are suffering from their own separate technical issues. For the MS console, Ubisoft is having problems fitting all the game data onto the DVD9 format that the XBox360 uses. On the other hand, the team is worried that the PS3 version will not be as good as the XBox360 version because the team is "really struggling right now on PS3" because of memory problems specific to Sony's console.

Assassin's Creed's meant to be out in November. Supposedly. Our breath is baited, though, after seeing these comments from Ubisoft's Patrice Desilets:

Right now we have a big challenge on the 360 to make it fit on a DVD, to put five languages, to put all the data on eight gigs.

That's problem #1. The 360's DVD. Problem #2 concerns the PS3.

On the Blu-ray side we're really good, but then the memory is quite different. How we handle memory is really different between the two machines and we're struggling right now on the PS3.

Taken from Kotaku, hmm hope there isn't more delays, that would suck.

Well, they have finished the game. Now it's all about bug fixes. Which, there seem to be alot of right enough :p But I don't see this slipping beyond its current release.

Which is kinda annoying really, since it comes out the same day as Mario Galaxy, which also happens to be 3 days before my first exam!

You think thats bad? Try owning a PC.
I have four games coming out on the same day. Crysis, UT3 (unless it slips), Assassin's Creed and Mario Galaxy.

Week after is Guitar Hero 3...

Week before that is Endless Ocean, before that Metroid, before that Zelda.

Plus i'm probably buying Phoenix Wright 3, Mario and Sonic and Umbrella Chronicles.

So many games!! >_>

The jumping attack looks cool, but the knives seem a little overly-accurate.

They still need to make fight AI better, they need to make it so you can take on, say, 3 at the most at once - 5 is just acceptable, but 10+ is ridiculous!

The last link posted in the instruction manuel looks freaking awesome, I don't think it would spoil the AC franchise (if done fairly realistically) with a modern day version, as long as they don't use snipers and loads of guns, we've already got GTA for that.

All I see mentioned at European online stores is the figure, even the picture shows a regular edition inside the box.
I have the L.E. pre-ordered, but if it's missing the extra goodies that are on the US release I'll just get the regular edition (and if I do that it'll be at a later date: just for this month I have currently pre-ordered, besides AC: Mass Effect Collector's Edition, Mario Galaxy, Kane & Lynch Collector's Edition, Game Center CX (Japanese DS game) and UT3 Collector's Edition; wait, I just noticed I also have Lifesigns (DS game) pre-ordered for several months now; and I really wanted to buy a couple of US DS games, like Contra 4 and Megaman ZX Advent, but there's no way I'll have any time to play all this games... :heh:).

I havn't actually read up on this for ages.

Gametrailers Review - 9.1

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/27754.html?type=flv

After watching that it's fair to say there are some dissapointing/laughable gameplay elements...
- Enemies 'lining up' in combat.
- Being 'invisible' [as they describe it] when stealth walking.

But the free running, horse riding, environments look great!

Did you actually listen to what the guy was saying, or read the review? He's spewing shite!

It would appear we is unhappy as the combat isn't button bashing (I'm practically quoting here...), and that the assassinations are repetitive, which must mean he hasn't really "played" the game - he's just gone from one mission to the next, without stopping to explore and have fun in between.
From what I'm seeing, I'm with Gamespot on this one, but I'll hold off a final verdict for tomorrow night after having played it for a while.

First impressions were what the hell is going on. Why is all that happening, put in a room with wierd stuff happening. It was all crazy. Now that I've played on, I love the game.
The reviewers who give this a low mark purely because of its repetitivness don't deserve to review games. I've been climbing walls, assassinating Templars, saving citizens. Pickpocketing aswell, which actually I should have gone to the Bureau first. I got something then it said return to the Bureau so I missed out on something then.
The horse riding is just amazing. I liked the look of Horse riding in SOTC but this, I love it. Much better, imho, than Twilight princess' horse riding.
Graphics area a bit iffy at times. Near the start when you are told to go to Damascus when your master is holding the bird...looked real bad. Ah well, this is like an Oblivion game that I like, with Templars and Knights and Assassins. When you do the Synching on a tower, it just looks amazing.

I'm not saying you are wrong but how can you gauge the games value and how repetitive the game is at this point. You have played what, 3 hours max. Of course the game doesn't seem repetitive.

From what I see, I want this game. Because jumping on buildings is fun and right, but the game as a whole doesn't seem the sum of its parts. I'll get it Christmas.

If you still say this after beating the game, then fair enough. But to debase all reviewers at this point is dumb. They have beaten the game, they may be wrong but they have had more to judge on than you right now.

Apparently I'm leader of the Reviewers Defense Force now/ :heh:

I rarely disagree with good reviewers on games, either I am an opinionless drone or they make good review. All this Bioshock hating of late by 1Up etc is bullshit though.

I've played more now, and yes the counter attacking is repetive. But seriously, how many different ways are you meant to kill someone with a sword.
I play games to play, not to look at them in tiny detail, beating the game as fast as I can to write a review before a deadline. The reviewers probably spent a day or two playing the game to the end, of course it'll seem repetitive if you play it none stop. If you span it out instead of devoting your whole time then no, it doesn't feel repitive at all.
Ickle tripe, I've gotten to Acre and the people I saved have said the same thing as the people in Damascus said. Great they got however many people to pose as models, but its the voice overs/speech that mean more imo.

This is a good point.

I think games magazines should do follow up reviews where they re-review a game 6 months or a year later to see how their opinion differs over time.

Exactly. But there are games, as a gamer which you cannot put down. COD4, Phantom Hourglass. You just want to keep playing them, whether to get a quick score on a time trial or to collect a fishing rod..P
But yeah, games like Assassins Creed should have a long review time. Spend a week or so reviewing, don't get tired of it by playing it for hours non stop then moaning it wasn't great.

Assassinating in this game feels so satisfying.

Actually, I wonder how long sites were playing this for review. It was embargoed until the 13th and 1Up were talking about playing it at least a week or two ago. Thats a good enough amount of time, I would say.

Your point stands however, flawed system etc.

What can i say about this game. I've only played an hour and a half and so far it is totally awesome.

I was totally confused at the beginning with what was happening, but as i progressed into the game i found it more enthrilling and breathtaking and things have started to clear up more. Just what you can do in the environment is great. Climb anything, hit anyone assassinate whoever near enough and hide in places. The graphics are amazing and so are the sound effects. Assassinations are satisfying in everyway. It is a stealth game mixed with the feelings of Prince of Persia.

And these are my thoughts of only the first hour of gameplay.

Games Radar say 10/10 (http://www.gamesradar.com/gb/xbox360/game/reviews/article.jsp?releaseId=2006090117215778002&articleId=2007110813535942758179&sectionId=1000&pageId=2007110813535919165040) :D

I really love this game! Yes, the voice samples get a tad repetitive, but I don't care. I actually really love sword fights, and the animations are unlikely to get old soon. My preferred tactic is going to high but easily accessible place after killing the odd solider, and then fighting the ones that follow me off the edge.

Oh, and I can't wait to unlock the rich district of Acre - I am so climbing the cathedral spire!

From Gabe at Penny Arcade.

I'm telling you all this because I want you to understand that if Assassins Creed actually was a 7.0 game I'd tell you. I also want you to know that when I tell you it's fucking incredible I'm not bullshitting you because we're running ads for the game.

There are about four or five reviews of the game with scores in the low to mid 7's. I want to cover some of the common complaints these reviewers had in case anyone out there is worried about them.

Many of the reviews say that the ending is bad. Obviously I don't want to give away any spoilers but I will say that the final confrontation was exciting and gratifying. It was an extremely satisfying ending to this chapter of the game. Chapter is the important word here. This is a huge story, probably a trilogy at least. The game does end with a cliff hanger and it certainly sets up the rest of the arc but that's how the first part of any multi part story ends. If Star Wars had ended with Luke jumping into his X-Wing to go take on the Death Star that would be a shitty fucking ending. It doesn't though, Luke destroys it and then we get hints about what's in store for our heroes. I'm telling you right now Altair destroys his Death Star.

I also can't be 100% positive but I'm guessing that some of these reviewers didn't let the credits role. Again, I don't want to spoil anything but wait for the credits to end. Until reviewers start posting their Gamertags along with the review we'll never really be able to tell how much of a game they played. But I'd be willing to bet some of them are missing the "Visions of the Future" achievement. I'm not gonna say why but If you don't have this achievement you can't say jack shit about the ending.

I think the biggest complaint I saw was that the missions become repetitive and boring. I actually didn't understand this complaint at all until just the other day. I had gotten an early copy of the game just like everyone else in the media but I was just playing it for fun. I'd cracked into it over the weekend and when I got into the office on Monday I started seeing these negative reviews. When I saw the low scores I was actually really upset and I wanted to talk about the game here on the site. I wanted to tell everyone that these guys were full of shit. However, since so many of the complaints were based on the ending I wanted to beat it first so I was sure I wasn't missing anything. I attacked the game again but this time with the goal of beating it as fast as I could. I was determined to get a post up on Tuesday and I was pushing through the game as fast as I could. I went from finding every high perch in a district to only getting the ones I needed to advance the story. I stopped saving every citizen and avoided any unnecessary confrontations. The informer missions that I had really enjoyed before, I now avoided because I knew they took too long to complete. I did the bare minimum of missions to progress the story and anything that "hindered" my progress was frustrating. Monday night after skipping over another combat (something I used to really enjoy) I stopped myself. What the fuck was I doing? I wasn't playing the game because I wanted to I was playing it because I had a deadline and I needed to beat it. I stopped immediately and decided I'd write about the game whenever I got around to beating it. I spent another day and a half with it and during that time I hunted for hidden flags and explored the cities again. I came in this morning and finally did beat it but I did it at my own pace and I enjoyed every part of it.

Imagine what an open ended sandbox title must look like to a reviewer especially right now. How many games do they have piling up on their desks? A game like Assassins creed isn't meant to be played under a deadline. You shouldn't be trying to beat it as fast as you can so you can move on to Mass Effect or Mario Galaxy. As soon as I gave myself a deadline all of a sudden I understood all their complaints. It was like a fucking Escher painting. I had put myself in their shoes and suddenly the landscape flipped and I could see games from their perspective. In the end I wasn't angry at them for their bad reviews. I actually just felt bad for them.

I'm going out today to pick this and Mario Galaxy up....I probably won't play Galaxy simply because my Wii currently isn't plugged in.....Yes I AM that lazy.

Sorry, I didn't write what I meant to write. I'll definitely play Mario but after I have a good long bash at Assassin's Creed because my Wii isn't plugged in. I will be very suprised if I haven't played both by tomorrow! :heh:

Plus I know Mario will be a blast whereas I'm slightly more curious to see Assassin's Creed in motion!

Man Gabe is saying exactly what I said earlier up the page. That's crazy, I might get a job reviewing games, independantly.

I've just gotten to Jerusalem now. Everything was going dandy until I was making my way to the eagle point, and was getting chased and the game just froze. I think my xbob froze, the guide didn't work. Anytime a game freezes that happens though. Shame was enjoying it up until then, I've killed so many people without dying now it's awesome. Counterattacks are so easy to pull off.

Anyway to someone who has the game, how far away are the flags viewable from. Can you see them from a distance and then go after them, like green orb hunting in crackdown.

I have been playing this a fair bit the last two days and I am loving every second of it! Have now down four of the main assassinations and have done all the 'free' mission in each area of the cities I've been in! I think the best way to describe it is kinda like Crackdown in the past, with the assassinations being like taking out the gang leaders and hunting for flags instead of orbs.

I honestly cannot understand all the reviews giving it 7's, like mentioned above they must have just zipped through it doing the bare minimum, definitely not the way to play this sort of game!

Am kinda pleased that I still haven't got my Wii back, means I can enjoy this until its done without the thought of Galaxy looming large over my head!

They're not as visible as Crackdown's Green Orbs but you can see them from a little way away, they have that glitchy pattern surrounding them which makes them fairly visible.
