Yes and no.

No = In terms of actual set top boxes (and yes, PS3 is included in this) the HD-DVD format is winning on this end (includes 360 HD-DVD drives).

Yes = Most months Bluray (bar this month, due to Children of Men on HD-DVD) outsell HD-DVD sold.

Its pretty freaking close at the moment. Movie sales, Bluray actual boxes shifted however, HD-DVD.

And tbh Blu-ray will win, look at how many good films are on and coming on Blu ray compared to HD-DVD's rather poor list...

Thats really good news to me. Got a HD DVD drive for the 360, and having heard all the recent stuff about Blu Ray winning, I've been a bit annoyed. Just waiting for some actual films to come out on HD DVD.

Cant remember mate, it was HD Digest or somewhere realiable(sp) like that.

On another note over the Chirstmas period the highest chart HD-DVD movie was Happy Feet at i think it was 112 place, there were 5 blu ray movies above that.

I don't get the whole Blur-Ray/HD-DVD thing. A movie is a movie, no? I'd rather spend a tenner buying a DVD than what, 40 on a Bluray? Perhaps when the prices come down but for now, I'm not interested.

Actually, Blu Ray movies are about £3-4 more than DVD.

If anything will win it will not be for some time. Many people will be appalled to remove of their DVD players and collection since lots of people have only just swapped to DVD.

SPHE's Blu-ray Disc offering at retail has expanded with new release titles such as The Holiday (March 13), Rocky Balboa (March 20), The Pursuit of Happyness (March 27), Volver (April 3), Catch and Release (May 8) and Stomp the Yard (May 15) hitting shelves across the next two months. One hundred percent of the new release and catalog titles just announced from SPHE, detailed below, fully utilize the capacity advantage the Blu-ray format's 50GB dual-layer disc offers, with more than 20 50GB titles already in the marketplace.

The only problem is how they count their sales. Blu-Ray sales include every free BD they give away with PS3's, in competition, ... They really had a lot of counts that are not worth it.

Here's a tip for the winner: Hybrid. It's perfectly possible and it runs right now. it's a little more expensive, but on the long run it will be cheap.

Early DVD adopters got fucked with both DVD+ and DVD-, then a combi drive was made.

Actually, I was referring to the disc, not the reader. If all published discs were Hybrid, there was no need to choose anyway.

The one that allows porn to be put on it will win, just like VHS.

As far as I'm aware, the current marketshare for HD discs is roughly 1%. So it's ridiculous to think either will win yet. At the end of the day HD DVD doesn't even have any films coming out for it yet. When it does sales will rise.

HD-DVD is falling away pretty quickly, Blu Ray is out selling it now and the future releases on HD-DVD are bleak to say the least, compare that to Blu Ray which has a very crowded release calendar.

I can't see it being long before Blu Ray is declared the successor to DVD.

Every HD-disc player can play DVD's, as well as CD's.

And no, it's not early to decide yet. But in the end it will be Bluray that wins - if only because Sony is a gigantic movie pusher on their own. We'll see.

I was so not getting a HD-disc player but I'm gonna purchase a PS3 when I can, it's a great machine at a great price for what it does.

I've found myself tempted to buy a PS3 recently. Watched a few movie trailors in HD and they literally blew me away, really trying to fight the urge because I doubt I'd end up buying many games for it and just use it for the movies!

The great thing about the PS3 is unlike the PS2 which has a cack dvd player, The PS3 is actually a very good blu ray players, it's load times for example are far quicker than that of the Samsung stand alone one.

I still do think Blu Ray will win, especially if HD DVD doesn't get any decent releases any time soon. Hopefully XBOX 360 gets a Blu Ray add on as well, so I can watch Spiderman 3 in HD.

I really hate it when there's loads of different formats for things.

There's gonna be a third format out soon from Warner called True HD, which features HD-DVD and Blu Ray versions of the same film on the same disc.

Honestly, they're both getting alot of movies, and with drop in price of HD-DVD its still way too early to decide.

Its a pointless debate, between the 2 formats they only hold a couple of percent of the market and by the time they get to anything more substantial (like 10%) IPTV and Movie Downloads/Streams will be running properly.

Ultimately i cant see either format winning out, its like the SA-CD vs DVD-A debate of a few years ago. Both formats messed around and then iTunes appeared and shut them both up
