Rumour: Frontline Studios Drop Sadness?

Posted by Nathan Whincup - Apr 9th 2007 15:00

In a sudden change of events, it appears that Frontline Studios have ceased the development of Sadness for the Wii.

A recent email conversation between a concerned fan called Ryan and Marcin Machel from Frontline Studios has revealed that Frontline have quite literally dropped their interest in developing Sadness for the Wii. Sadness is a survival horror game set pre-World War I and presented in black and white, like an old movie. Although this is a rumour for now and we need official confirmation from Nibris, it might be interesting to note that we haven't heard any news of this game or seen any screenshots or video in months. Here is the email conversation:

Dear Frontline Studios, NIBRIS claims that you are programming the game called Sadness for the Nintendo Wii. Most of us believe that this game is nothing but a scam - a big joke that NIBRIS is trying to pull over on us. The artwork and concept of the game seem too good to be true, and the lack of information on it give us the conclusion that the game is actually not in development at all and is just to gain attention from Nintendo consumers. I was just wondering if you can confirm that you are programming the game Sadness for NIBRIS and can for a fact say that the game is not fake. Thanks for your time! Sincerely, Ryan

And the response:

Hello Ryan, I can confirm that FRONTLINE is no longer interested in developing Sadness game based on Nibris' concept, and also Nibris is not authorized to claim anything on behalf of FRONTLINE. Best regards, Marcin Machel

Stay tuned for the latest developments.

I thought Nibris were doing most of the programming anyway? I hope this title is still in development, it's my most anticipated third party game!

Has Nibris even found a publisher for the game yet?

Nibris have been doing most of the developing anyway. Im guessing that Frontline dropping the game must be a bit old as they wouldnt just announce it to a fans email that they would be dropping the game. Anyway, I do believe that Nibris are still developing the game on their own now. Frontline were being used to help with the sound and a few other things.

And they do have a publisher but are keeping secret about it as apparently the publisher is 'Big.' Thats all they've said.

Either way i'm not that fussed we've see very little of sadness, as for the video that's been shown it's only a black and white video.
We need to see actually in game footage.
They've also been quiet on raid over the river.

We shouldn't come to conclusions too quickly around here..
The mail states that Frontline is no longer interested in the game and that Nibris can't claim that Frontline is doing anythign regarding the Sadness game.

Honestly, I think Nibris is still going on with the development.
The mail doesn't say the game is cancelled at all!
It mereley states that Frontline has nothing to do with it anymore, and lost interest.
So it doesn't truly say anything yet..

Frontline is suppose to be publisher not developer. this is where the story sounds wrong and fake.

you're right. the game was being developed by nibris with the help of 2 other companies. frontline were just said to be a publisher.

the letter doesn't sound too professional either......

Hamsterpig....Why show a colour video for a game that was/is to be done in a black & white graphical style ? (Thats if it ever was a true title in development).

Nibris do need to give answers to put various peoples cynicism to rest with a little more than the occasional 'vase of flowers and a monster' concept art though.

4q2 I didn't explain myself properly, I was meaning we've only seen a video that doesn't really show what the game is.
As soon as I see game footage I may be interested.

Although I know it's a horror set around world war 2.Think it's ww2 anyway.

Hamsterpig....Fair play.
I agree all the way some type of solid game build footage would be nice.

Dammit, games industry, what is it with you and great ideas that never come to fruition, and consumers instead being force-fed the same old cack over and over?

they are certainly a real developer. whether they are the small developer they claim is another matter.

this news means nothing really aside from they need (or have) another publisher. if the claims of a movie tie in are true, then money or contract could have been a factor.

raid over the river is certainly a real game. there is official footage of the game. i'm sure this site already reported it a while back.

Why have people said that Frontline Studios were publishers? They weren't. They were helping developing the game. As has been said before, a developer for the game has been picked and is being held as a secret and Frontline wasn't the publisher.

actually, the official announcement from the frontline webpage is still cached on google. it reads:

"FRONTLINE Studios announced today that it has signed a co-production agreement with Nibris , the author of the highly anticipated Sadness game for the Wii platform. "
