News: Mario Party 8 Delayed Again

Posted by Dean Jones - Jul 13th 2007 19:31

Mario Party 8 finally reached stores in the UK... then gets recalled...

Mario Party 8 has been delayed in the UK until an unspecified date.

Due to an assembly error, a small number of games sent to the stores contained the "wrong version" of Mario Party 8, so Nintendo have recalled all copies of the game. Nintendo have promised that they will correct the mistake as soon as possible. No date has been given on when we should expect Mario Party 8.

Reports suggest that the "wrong version" of the game contains the word "spastic". In British English, "spastic" is a politically incorrect, and an abusive term, for an ungainly or physically inept person; whereas the word is inoffensive in American English. This is also suggested to be the cause of the original delay of the game.

Erm... crikey.

I saw it in Game earlier today and I thought they'd finally released it. Are they reprogramming the discs or will totally new copies have to be made?

Ubisoft did the same thing a few weeks ago didn't they? Perhaps people should inform developers that the term in question is offensive over here...

Nintendo-master, keep hanging around the forums. Give it some time, the online board usually isn't very busy and Animal Crossing has been played to death on N-Europe, so people are taking some time apart. :p I'll give your village a visit at some points, and I'll bring gifts. Just continue hanging around the forums though.

I've just had a thought. Imagine if you kept the recalled version of the game. It might fetch quite a bit on eBay at some point.

Why can't they just sticker it:

WARNING - you may be called a spastic in this game.

hehe Ι never thought that when an HMV salesperson said on thursday "you'd better preorder it because it will sell out really fast" he would actually know what he was talking about. :p I came out of the store mumbling "this is not the US, people don't go for games like this in the UK". However I am sure that "his insight" was just a coincidence.

So whoever was lucky to get it can now enjoy the beginning of the third generation of MP games (unlike critics reviews). Can someone let us know where that word is?

One of the few times political correctness is right. Being "spastic" is a medical condition and shouldn't be used in a derogatory sense.

To Nathan's original question, I should imagine the discs aren't re-programmable and will need to be entirely re-made undortunately, although given the recent review of MP8, I'm not too bothered personally. As for the reasoning behind it, too right they pulled it off the shelves, I can see some people getting offended by it, though I'm a little torn on the issue.

Esparcia Personaly I don't know of any country that speaks to each other and badly as us brits tbh.

However this is a mario game, kids will play it, and to be perfectly honest while most of us dont mind f'ing and blind'in words like "spastic" (colloquial word for someone who has cerebral palsy), and other medical conditions that have been turned into derogatory colloquial terms such as babies who's mothers took thalidomide during their pregnancy, "thlids"(phlids), are imo off bounds.

Does Mario call Luigi a spastic? That'd be great.

Hahaha, imagined when you lose and Bowser calls you a 'Great big spastic!' Now this is funny, if a little un-PC.

The recalled version will probably be sent to mainland Europe. The french probably aren't gonna be upset that the english language option has a single word that's not entirely politically correct in another country :p

God bell America.

And yes it's a little weird that an American would get his news from a feed called N-Europe, but that's just because most American feeds suck in comparison.

Luckily I got it before they recalled the game for my little brother. I got the day day released a few hours after it opened. When was it recalled?

I wish I'd preordered it from Gameplay now. -_-
I didn't because of it's mixed reviews.
