News: Mario Kart Wii Info

The latest ONM sheds some light on what we can expect from the latest entry of the series, including the online side of things...

The latest edition of ONM reveals some information concerning the latest Mario Kart title, which is heading to the Wii early next year. When it was first announced, it was also claimed that the game would feature online Wi-Fi play, like it's predecessor - which launched Wi-Fi for the DS, including those friend codes...

ONM have stated that the popular battle section of the game would in fact feature 16 online player battles so people can duke it out to see who is number one. Players will also be able to pull stunts in mid-air, though it is not yet known if it will help game-play in a specific way, for instance avoiding those pesky blue shells.

And if you thought that wasn't enough, all the tracks that are available on the DS version of the title will also be available in the game, as well as brand new tracks. Gamers will be spoilt for choice. Not much else is known about the online mode at the moment, though we're clinging on to the hope that the friend codes might somehow be alleviated...

Update: ONM recently released an announcement that would surely anger fans. ONM stated that even though they didn't say it was speculation or they were making it up misleading many readers and it looked like a fact, the details they gave is what they wanted to see in the game. The statement they gave is below

“The details printed in Official Nintendo Magazine 21 regarding Mario Kart Wii were healthy speculation on our part and are in no way an official announcement from Nintendo. We are sorry if we have mislead anyone. We do not set out to mislead our readers. ONM apologises profusely for any misunderstandings that this has caused.” - ONM

Though was the information they printed under an NDA and wasn't supposed to get published?

Stick to N-Europe for more news or as it breaks...

Sounds like they're trying to make it the biggest and best Mario Kart yet, that can never be bad :D

lack of battle mode on the DS was a big loss, looking forward to this, if I get bored of Halo 3 by then.

I hope they have way more tracks like Yoshi's Circuit from the DS/GC MK and Mario Circuit...basically tracks which loads of bends.

Fan-freak'n-tastic! I can't wait for this! lol :D ;) Mario Kart DS was incredible and Double Dash kicked serious @$$. ;)

Hopefully, they'll included every mode, track, option, and feature on the Wi-fi (and WLAN?) side of multi-player. That was the only real gripe I had with MKDS & MKDD. Missing features, options, tracks and other goodies in the Wi-Fi and LAN modes.

Personally, I LOVED Double Dash and even though I really doubt they will, I hope Nintendo includes the doubled-up riders concept (as an alternate gameplay feature) that was featured in Double Dash. That enabled some freak'n insane multiplayer matches (especially in LAN mode). :D

Sol you do realise this is Mario Kart not Need for Speed?

Sol, I told you before, use point form. Don't try to write a paragraph because you write one big jumbled run-on mess that no one can understand.
Oh wait, I saw pit-stop while scanning the post and didn't even bother reading it.
What made Mario Kart great = fun and simple, anyone could step right into it.

Solitanze, you don't want Mario Kart. You want Grand Turismo with Mario characters.

"'scanning' the post"

I guess someone has been playing a lot of Metroid Prime lately... :P

Bah.. It would not be Mario Kart without the ever-so-annoying random occurences and purely-based-on-luck wins.

"16 online player battles"

Does this mean 16 battle maps (which I think it means) or a battle mode where 16 players can play against each other?

WOW...ALL the DS tracks?!!? O_O

The DS had absolute shitloads, its own (some of which were fantasicaly designed), plus loads from old Mario Kart games.

This is fantasic. Viva la Baby Park!

The 16 comment probably means 16 player, but not all at once, probably a league mode. (16 at once would be lag city).

i think they mean 16 players at once. though i'm thinking some of those will have to be on the same console maybe (maybe some kind of coop). it takes long enough to get 4 players on the ds.

and hopefully ALL the tracks will be online. unlike the ds......

Nah, we've got 64-player Battlefield 2142 games going on these days without a hint of lag, so why would Mario Kart be unable to pull off a 16 player game?

Oh, theres lag in those battles, its just less noticeable.I think they normaly they linerly extrapolate movement to estimate the missing frames of data. Works 9/10. (you sometimes see players "jump" slightly).

Racing games are going to be a lot more fussy.

I'm not saying its impossible, its just that lag issues get worse with each player added.
16 player racing on a machine like the Wii seems unlikely.

I think ONM are far more professional than NOM were... I don't think it's any fault of any staff, but Future and Emap are very different publishers with different policies. I would love to work at ONM, or any videogaming mag for that matter
