News: Text Chat But No Voice For Mario Kart

Nintendo reveal the ability to text chat with your opponents on Mario Kart Wii...

Nintendo of Europe have today broken the news that text chat will be included in the forthcoming Wii version of the Mario racer. Not available during matches themselves, you can instead create rooms for your friends to join, and chat while you wait for other racers to appear.

USB keyboard support is expected, though players will still be able to enter messages via a Wii-mote controlled on-screen keyboard. This announcement seems to rule out the hopes of some for voice chat support in the game - something Nintendo still hasn't brought to Wii.

Will my i-Mac USB keyboard work on my Wii?

I don't see what the fuss about voicechat is. Is it a function that AUTOMATICALLY makes a game more MATURE ultimately making it a PREMIUM MATURE OFFICIAL SERIES FRANCHISE GAME, or is it a function that 100% GUARANTEED adds 5,000,000+ sales to the total amount of unit sales?

I thought people would actually want to protect their privacy and not have their part of themselves exposed to other citizens on Earth, for you see, there are dangerous people out there in society, paedophiles, people with voice fetishes and the BOGEYMAN!

The Bogeyman! zomg! don't forget demons, ghosts and Trolls. :P

But seriously, for the majority of Wii games, sod the chat, I just want to play lol I got fed up of listening to annoying americans (mostly) shouting random abuse for no apparent reason in the middle of online matches on XBL long ago.

brilliant. we have to wait 35 minutes for some random stoned player to text that wer're "all going downtown" with the wiimote, then logoff after losing the 1st race.

personally i'd rather have absolutely no chat at all. some kind of character taunt or gesture facility would work for me.

argh! voice chat is my main thing I'm wanting from Nintendo! It rocks, especially on the 360 when its my first go at gears of war and its a 3 against 1 match where I'm the one and then a lot of people laughing because you die! It's just fin I think and I think they should put voice chat for friends at least! I mean I'm not expecting it with random people!

"It's just fin I think and I think they should put..." sorry I meant to write 'fun' not 'fin'

While I don't use voice chat much, I don't like the way Nintendo is thinking with this. It seems more of a "well not everyone will use it so we won't include it" decision rather than "well give them the choice. code it so we can use it with any game and give thema all the choice".

Voice chat is overrated. I don't need people swearing at me*, playing random music or just producing noise because their mic sucks.

There isn't even any importance to communication in this game like there is in some teambased FPS games where voice chat can be a godsend to a organized team. It doesn't really emulate the fun to be had with 4 players playing it in the same room, either.

i just found out that texting will not actually be available after all, instead we will be able to choose from a list of probably not swear words to hurl at our oponents.

honest!!

The limitations of the feature have outweighed the benefits of it being incorporated into the game in the first place...
