News: The First Cheaters Arrive On Mario Kart Wii

Posted by George Cook - Apr 11th 2008 18:40

Let's be honest, it had to happen eventually...

Today was the official launch of Mario Kart Wii but already code junkies are rubbing dirt in our eyes! 3 people that are playing online seem to have found some kind of code that makes them able to ride a exact time like the other two on every track out there. This is virtually impossible so it can only be achieved by cheating. Here are 3 pictures of it:

Just when you though it was safe to go back into the online ranked matches...

Nintendo have gone to extensive measures to remove unfair techniques such as snaking, but we suppose cheats can't be neutered entirely.

Will Nintendo release a patch to combat the little cheats? No.

I was going to say it wouldn't be impossible for all 3 to get the same time. But I wasn't paying attention and looked at the screenshots again and saw how far ahead of everyone else they were. Bloody cheaters! Better not ruin any online matches I'm in! I had to put up with it on the DS with both MKDS and MPH.

I'm sure Nintendo will find a way to deal with them. There are only a few ways in which you could do so, but they'd sort 'em out, if only temporarily.

The real injustice is knowing that Nintendo will do absolutely nothing about it.

The real injustice is that WE DON'T HAVE MARIO KART WII YET!!!!! oh well, I'll have to wait... thanks God I got the Wii Zapper yesterday and I'm still on my second Adventure in Galaxy, still loads of "achievements" to unlock in Brawl and have to get a good gamerscore with my new Gamertag on Live lol... that'll keep me busy until MKW and WiiWare arrive to America lol

DarkPGR we already have the game, if it's not the store you go to, not really a lot to do about that.
Prodigy, not exactly, these cheaters are most likely using altered copies of the game (through Trucha signing), the update mentioned before renders this useless, meaning altered copies of the game won't be running and cheaters will be wiped out.

As already mentioned, I guess it wouldn't be impossible, just unlikely that 3 people could get the same time even if they were way ahead of the other players. What makes it impossible for me is that the same 3 people have done it on 3 different tracks with the 3 same times.
I guess it's a matter of pride but does it really matter? If they want to cheat and we all know they did, then we know where the real standings start.

@D_prOdigy: Well, what are they supposed to do? I doubt they thought ahead and made it possible to ban people from the online mode, and there is no way to change it now. My guess is the best thing they can do is to erase their score from the leaderboard, but then they can just do it again.

Let's hope they learn from it and take precautions for the next major online title.
On a side-note, cheaters aren't very uncommon on the DS either.

It's a shame people can't be a good sport online. Cheating in singleplayer doesn't hurt anyone, but cheating online is just weak.

To be honest it's just pathetic, why bother cheating in a game like this? It's meant to be there to have fun, that's the whole reason Nintendo got rid of most leader board options and wins/losses ratio from DS.

And it's obvious to anyone that they're cheating, so all they're doing is singling themselves out to the world that's what they're doing.

well it was bound to happen eh
i doubt they'll do anything to fix it either

oh well! online is awesome fun anyway, i've had possibly my longest gaming session for quite a while today ... it's very addictive, had some fantastic races. i didn't know you got a racing score that you get points deduced from / added to based on your placing, it's a great idea.

Um, has anyone thought Nintendo could ban these people from online play? The game will have recorded thier system code and friend code. Nintendo could ban them from ever playing mario kart online again, make an example out of em.

Or better yet, ban them from ever playing ANY Wii game online ever again, make a huge example out of em, requiring them to buy a new Wii to play online. Big slap in the face to cheaters and I'm sure we'd all appreciate it. Steam does it, why can't ninty?

Since I don't have the game I can only guess at what's going on. So this is the leaderboard for track times? Are they racing really fast in vs games or is it just a scoreboard/time manipulation? If they are doing it in vs games I'd be unhappy. If it's for track times then I don't care as much.

Did anyone read what I posted? At all?
People who are cheating are most likely using ALTERED COPIES OF THE GAME, once the update hits (the one that blocks the freeloader, this won't be possible. What do you want more?

Hi guys,

My mate stayed at mine for a few days and changed his delivery address so that his copy arrived here and got it a day early 10/04/08 and played it all day and eventually played online and my younger bro and my mate swore they played against someone that cheated. Anyway me and my younger bro got our copy yesterday in our local GAME store and loads of people rushed in when the store opened and all rushed for Mario Kart Wii lol it was abit insane. Anyway this game is amazing and have not shouted at the TV for a while in shear joyment and excitment. This game is so good it makes me wanna play it right now.

An in-game cheating method Nintendo cant do much to stop, without patching. And the Wii cant do that. (which, imho, overall is a good thing even though its bad in this case).

They can ban accounts, like many have suggested.

*but only if they already wrote a warning for
missuse in the lisence agreement*

Have they? I dont know?

If its an cheating method based on altered code then yes, a firmware update will probably prevent it running. (once nintendo finds out HOW its being done).
The sad side effect is that this sort of thing makes legitmate homebrewing get penalised as well.

As stated by Hellfire, hopefully some update will put an end to this if it is on altered copies of MK (which I imagine it must be). I hate cheating online so much!!! Where is the fun in it, that's what I want to know!

On a side note I havent gone online yet....waiting for my stupid long patch cable to arrive in the post (no wifi where I'm currently at) so I'm missing out on what must be the most fun aspect! Still having fun trundling through the Grand Prix and I just love the Wii Wheel, it controls so perfectly!!!

When I'm eventually online again I shall have to add some of you wonderful, non-cheating, chaps and chapesses!

does the freeloader come packed with action replay?

if not, then there's a program that lets you change the code of any iso already out there.

i heard that microsoft were removing dodgy scores from live and issuing warnings or bans. doesn't sound like nintendos way though.

What's the point of cheating? it doesnt show any skill...

Those times are way too good compared with the other times

Jerks..

apart from this, the multiplayer online is awesome!!

Maybe they are identicle triplets that do everything exactly the same with mixed parents which is why 2 are from UK and one from germany.

If I can't win at anything using my own skill then I don't see the point in participating.

I've been playing games for 30 years and although I am very good at a wide range of games I'm pretty poor against other online which makes it all the more exciting when I do eventually get a win!! :P

If you download and race their ghost you can see how they did it. They just go along at a usual speed but what's odd is they will never use power slides at all, and once they cross the finish line they turn around instantly facing the wrong way and sit there forever. It does this on every track and doesn't seem like a human playing at all.

If you go past the finish line before them the time difference appears as "+[whatever your time currently is]" showing they've obviously set the counter to not move off zero.

Oh and last time I checked there were four people with those times now.

Looking at their ghost replay, I think they are waiting for the timer to get past 99mins. I bet that it resets to zero and then they go finish the race.

As for four people doing this, I'm not sure.

someone posted this in the gbatemp forums.

"All you have to do, apparently, is, as you cross the line after the first lap, do a U-turn, then stop, and it causes some kind of glitch that ends the trial, and shows the signle lap time, as the total time for all 3 laps. "
Falcofire Says:
April 12th, 2008 at 15:38 || Total Comments: 125
@ Auntnadia

Thats what it looks like if you download their ghost data. They complete one lap and that lap's time becomes the final time for all three laps

I don't understand how they all get exactly the same time then, and why they drive so strangely without power slides or anything :S

Not necessarily. If they've installed a mod chip in their Wii, they can use the Zelda savegame exploit to load homebrew code. So far Nintendo stands empty handed against this.

if you look around the modding community, most people are in agreement that it's a glitch in the game.

if it were a tampered iso, it's strange that noones claimed it yet.
