News: Hitler Banned From Mario Kart Wii

Posted by George Cook - May 17th 2008 09:02

Nintendo won’t allow Miis by the name of Hitler on its Wi-Fi service.

Let’s be honest, if you’ve got a Wii then chances are you’ve created Miis of people other than yourself. Forget that failed attempt at recreating Bowser, we’re talking about famous people – if you haven’t at some point tried to create Hitler then you, friend, are in a minority. It seems Nintendo has latched on to this in its ‘safe and fun’ policy by banning Miis with the name Hitler from Mario Kart Wii.

People who select their Hitler Mii and connect to the Wi-Fi service will be kicked back out again with the message ‘You cannot access Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection using this Mii name. Please change your Mii name and try again’. What happens if you share the Nazi leader’s name? Blame Nintendo, not us!

Nintendo give further proof that they like their (quite frankly stupid) childish image, and make more gate the wifi service.

I do understand Nintendo on this. Hitler is no popcultural figure, he was a massmurderer and lunatic. There's nothing fun about him and quite personnaly I have to question everyone who thinks that it is funny to play Mario Kart like that.
Go, Nintendo!

Exactly. You want to have Hitler on your Wii then that's fine. You want to put such an evil figure on a worldwide service with the possibility of offending others then Nintendo are right to stop it. Just look at the very un-"childish" laws that Germany has regarding the Nazis.

If you want to get round it change the 'L' to un upper-case I and it looks exactly the same, but you can get online.

No know, you really can't blame Nintendo for being so strict. Everytime they allow some sort of self-identification online, there are some morons that have to abuse it for Hitler-Miis or offensive logos on MKDS. You think it's funny? Well, it isn't.

Once they start censoring like that it opens up a massive can of worms

I think this is just wrong. It is unjust censorship and really should not be tolerated. If you are going to create an engine for creating people's caricatures, you can't just dismiss that fact that people might make a Mii of a famous person in history. Ugh, stupid Nintendo.
Kurtle Says:
May 17th, 2008 at 14:00 || Total Comments: 268
I'm with GCTonyHawk7 on this one...
I mean, where does this stop, it could end up turning into XBox Live where every other word is banned, even if it would be allowed on kids TV...

This is all quite ironic really, banning someone from existing...

Also....anyone could find anyone offencive...
Swan Says:
May 17th, 2008 at 14:05 || Total Comments: 316
i don't see any irony anywhere, or anyone being banned from existing.

yeah anyone could find anyone offensive.
but it's not just anyone is it?
Tealovertoma Says:
May 17th, 2008 at 14:09 || Total Comments: 365
"but it's not just anyone is it?"

There's a huge list of dictators (and plenty that killed more than Hitler), if they ban Hitler they should ban all of those as well. And then you're on a slippery slope, because where do you draw the line?

I'm with GCTonyHawk7

Nintendo banning the name Hitler from MKWii online is a good thing. And it's not even that strict. Try looking up some of the news stories about Xbox Live accounts being closed down because of the use of the word 'gay' in the title. It's by no menas the strictest thing they could have done but I certainly think it's good. I'm sure they will ban other names sooner or later so anybody using them should start using other Miis.
Swan Says:
May 17th, 2008 at 14:12 || Total Comments: 316
i'm not in favour of the ban either, but i think it's justifiable on nintendo's part. yeah there are other dictators etc. but how many of them are likely to be recreated by Wii users?
D_prOdigy Says:
May 17th, 2008 at 14:19 || Total Comments: 1596
I suppose only jocks would play as a Hitler Mii anyway, but I can see where people are coming from when they claim it's unjustified censorship.

Even if it means Nintendo flooding their online games with disclaimers and warnings, then I'd much rather have a completely free online system.
Scythe3000 Says:
May 17th, 2008 at 15:47 || Total Comments: 200
Quite alot of you seem to be talking about this as if its the first time an online game has ever banned names such as hitler. Its not and by a flipping huge margin.

You guys can't be playing many online games if u think this is new, its common place and quite frankly is NOT news.
Tphi @ N-E Says:
May 17th, 2008 at 17:16 || Total Comments: 426
While I myself wouldn't take offence at a Hitler Mii, I can see how some would be offended. He's the most well known mass-murderer the world has ever known, and using his face as a joke will undoubtedly offend some. As far as I'm aware, Nintendo also block swear words in names.
Hamsterpig Says:

Will Nintendo block the heads that look like a penis? ;-)
Nirual Says:
May 17th, 2008 at 17:53 || Total Comments: 92
@Christophalus: Hitler is more universally recognizable, but I'm sure they'll ban other offensive Mii names when they get too popular.
Of course, it's impossible to block every name and variation thereof...
except if they use the Brawl variant of absolutely no identification if you aren't playing with friends.

@Scythe3000: Very much agreed, but it's the first news of that sort on Nintendo Wifi. Not that I'm surprised in any way.

Not yet. But imagine if they do, and your head actually looks like a penis... I'd be offended. =)

I'm always against censorship... whe can't deny someone really evil existed and ban his image or name. As other said: where draw the line?
Humanity needs to learn to deal and to condamn such people, not to try and make like they never existed.
After all, if people were really offended by Hitler Miis, they could just refuse to play with people who use them.

I saw some Hitler Mii online, I know what he did (of course), yet I wasn't offended by just a cameo of him. Being offended for such a stupid thing would be an insult to my intelligence, when there are real and still living people who do evil things out there. :(

Nintendo just fears to be sued by someone, in my opinion, and I can't really blame them since there are people who could find any excuse, even the silliest ones, to make out money from them (it already happen in the past... who remembers those parents who sued Nintendo of America since their children hurt their hands by playing too much one games from the Mario Party games? Like it was Nintendo faults if their children were stupid... -__-' ).

Scythe3000 Says:
May 19th, 2008 at 04:33 || Total Comments: 200
@ Lenin hehe perhaps

But then OOT has never been Nintendo's biggest seller.

On a side note, correct me if i'm wrong, but the PS3 version of GTA4 has been selling toe to toe against Mario Kart Wii state side? Interesting if its indeed true, can't remember where i had seen/read that so i may have pulled it out my arse, as it might just mean Nintendo knows what it is doing these days :P

Unlike Solitanz who has zero clue. Seems to think that while Nintendo is Selling more Consoles, both handheld and home, than anyone else. Is selling more games than anyone else and making more money than anyone else in the industry that Nintendo is somehow losing?

I've had mroe use out of My Wii than I ever did with my GC and I loved my GC to bits.

Every time I go onto Mii Contest Channel then onto Posting Plaza THEN onto the magnifying glass, I look for a REALLY GOOD Adolf Hitler Mii using its entry number:
4841-3116-6360
but the screen says 'No Miis found'.

Even when I look under the talent of 'Speeches' as well as under the gender 'male', even though I find OTHER Hitler Miis, I never find this particular one, even when I go onto 'Call friends' with the Hitler Miis I see on this channel.

Why can't you search for a Mii if you know its initials (I know this one's were AH) or even if you know its Mii Artisan? I know the area of the Mii Artisan of this Hitler Mii I can't find was the UK and its Mii Artisan was 'KKSlider'.

Hmm, I should have looked at the OTHER Miis posted by KKSlider and taken down some of THEIR entry numbers.
