Rumour: Widescreen DS Lite Leaked?

Posted by Tom "Tphi" Phillips - Jul 7th 2008 16:55

An image of an apparent DS Lite redesign has hit the 'net! Fancy dual widescreens in your hands? Check it out inside...

Picture the scene. You open the forthcoming issue of Nintendo Power and notice a full-page advert for Disgea on the DS. "Cool," you say, "could be good." Then you look closer at the advert, and realise that the image of the DS Lite it is playing on is not a normal DS Lite at all...

Well, that is exactly what has happened - or so we are ever-sceptically being made to believe. Blog Aeropause.com found the advert and scanned it in. So if it is a photoshop job designed to wind us all up, you know who to blame.

On the other hand, if it is a massive blunder showing the new DS Lite pre-E3, well then you read it here first!

Update, 8th July: Eurogamer reports that Nintendo has called the advert "purely rumour and speculation".

This is obviously a fake, the screens aren't lined up. Look closely.

Disproportionately messy screens, no clear improvements over the Lite design, and a generally shoddy Photoshop.

That has to be the worst fake ever. Even the screens are not aligned.

lol, you can see the curved grooved plastic of the real touch screen peeking out at the top of the photoshopped touch screen.

One thing I've always wondered. In America and Japan, why do games always get TV and print advertising months before their release? I remember they did it with that animated movie where Ricky Gervais was a fat pigeon over here 3 months before it was released, I just can't see it doing much good apart from irritating people with repetition.

Ah cmon, it's clear this is no fake. It's a shop, sure, but it's not like they were trying to convince anyone of a widescreen DS. Why would this appear, before that revelation? It's just so they can have the screenshots bigger! Nothing else. They've not even tried to look realistic, the screens don't even line up!

It's not a fake because the makers have never claimed it was advertising a widesreen DS, it's just an advertisement for a game where they decided to make the pictures a bit bigger, thats all

First thing I noticed being the light for that DS is red so it's low on battery and the speakers aren't evenly spaced on the side of the console. It's gotta be even dammit!

Apart from the obvious fakeness of the pictures themselves, a widescreen DS would be a no go, simply because the current DS games library doesn't support widescreen output.

XD I'm surprised this was even given its own entry here on N-Europe, methinks a bit of quality control would not go amiss.

Gamespot posted this as bogus. And the game developer/advertiser confirmed.

:P
I might put off getting the green one if they actually did release something like that..

Thank fook for the update... maybe we can move along now. The DS' in the picture were obviously only doctored like that to show off more of the games.

This has been up on gamespot for the last 24 hours or so:

While the DS image appears convincing, the ad is clearly not an actual photo of Nintendo's handheld. The prinny infestation aside, the handheld's screens contain standard advertisement images within the DS's screens, which offer information on the upcoming titles, rather than in-game shots. It stands to reason, then, that NIS would take some liberties with the DS's layout to accommodate its ad images...

The official story: ...And that's just what the publisher has done. "We placed screenshots on a DS backing to emphasize the platform, and edited them for effect," said a NIS America representative. "These games are specifically for the current Nintendo DS, and as far as we know, there is no 'widescreen DS' in the works. We apologize for any confusion."
