News: Rock Band, GH Instruments Incompatible

Posted by Nathan Whincup - Aug 30th 2008 12:57

Activision reveal that Rock Band 2 instruments will not be compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour (and vice versa, naturally).

Following on from the news that Line 6 technology had been dropped from the Wii version of Guitar Hero World Tour, a little more bad news has unfortunately emerged from Activision which affects both World Tour and EA's rival product, Rock Band 2.

Rock Band 2's instrument peripherals will not be compatible with the Wii version of Guitar Hero World Tour, and similarly Guitar Hero World Tour's instruments can not be used with the Wii version of Rock Band 2. Brian Bright, Guitar Hero World Tour's project director, has spoken out on the matter.

"Basically on the Wii... GH3 followed Nintendo's guidelines about all third party controllers had to use the Wii mote. So GH3 did, and so did GHWT.. But RB somehow did not, and therefore they are not compatible with us.

"Nothing we could do on this one, I don't know how HMX was able to bend the rules but they seemed to do so and here we are."

This is unfortunate news for players who were hoping to purchase the instrument set of either game and then buy a stand-alone copy of the other game. For players who are looking to get both games, you'll either have to pay for both the Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour instrument sets, or, shock horror, purchase a 360 or PS3 instrument set and buy a stand-alone copy of the other game.

Well that's Activision just lying. They're doing it that way because they want more people to spend money on their products instead of buying Harmonix's instruments.

They wanted to do it that way on the 360 as well but Microsoft forced them to make them work together. They could easily get either to work with both on the Wii but they're just refusing to because they're not made to and making it out to be Harmonix's fault by saying they made it without the Wii remote. As far as I know they can't work together on PS3 either and there's even less of an excuse they can make there, no "oh but there's doesn't use the Wii remote" excusing there.

Anyway I'll be buying it on 360 and using the same controller on each.

the wii version of rock band is already gimped with its lack of online, there is no reason to buy it on wii as a first choice anyway

and as far as activision being lazy and blaming it on harmonix, i think its safe to say activision are pushing the online capabilities of the wii alot harder than most and also pushing nintendo for added storage, so when the wii gets an add on hard drive or memory device it will im sure be coinciding with guitar hero world tour and be thanks to their efforts with nintendo along with the fan demands

Not to fused about this here. It sucks for those who only have a Wii and enjoy playing the games. But I'll be getting both on the 360 as I already have the existing ones and several guitars (didn't buy any of the RB instruments. Too expensive) along with over £100 worth of DLC. Gonna need a new harddrive at the rate I'm getting the DLC. Wish they'd hurry up with the Offspring and Rush stuff though.

This is very bad news for all Wii owners, the few that dont own multiple consoles i mean. It really is up to Nintendo to sort this kind of thing out, Microsoft and Sony both forced Harmonix and Red Octane to create compatible tools but clearly in this case Nintendo didnt get involved and this is the result. I dont need to remind the sellers of the games that even if a gamer could afford both sets of instruments, where the hell would they store them? Ah well, good job most of us have one of the other machines anyway...

It might almost be less expensive to buy a 200 euro xbox360 and getting that version...as I don't think everyone even has the place to store all those accesories
