News: Stephen Fry Appraises The Wii

Posted by George Cook - Aug 31st 2008 00:10

The man who was recently voted the most intelligent TV personality has recently praised the Wii for its consumer friendliness - and china smashing prowess.

Stephen Fry can be described as many things humorist, writer, actor, novelist, filmmaker and television presenter. He is also a massive technophile and writes a weekly article called Dork Talk for the Guardian about gadgets. This week Stephen had a look at the Wii and said, as only he can:

"Nintendo's recrudescence is yet further proof that the market (ie the population) wants machines that don't frighten, but befriend. The snarling roars of the feral Xbox and the brutal PlayStation are impressive, but Nintendo understands that while play does involve competition, territoriality and rehearsal for war, it also involves silliness, laughter and fun."

Stephen also reported on the benefits of motion control with regard to interior design.

"If your wife, mother or lover has a china ornament you have always hated, make sure it is within a 10-yard radius of the TV and you can be sure it will be smashed within a fortnight. Another Wii service for which we can all be truly thankful"

Comments, as always are welcome.

He seems to have more understanding of the industry than most "hardcore" gamers you tend to encounter these days.

I don't understand how this makes news. Oh well.
He wrote about the DS in his column last week.

It will be interesting to say the least to hear his voice on Fable 2 when it's released in October. At least we'll have some proper voice acting in a game.

It's nice having more words for why it is Wii succeeds, as some "hardcore gamers" I know are still dumbfounded about it.

They completely fail to see the 360s and/or PS3s outwards signal through design and marketing, of pubescent aggression, or indeed how that could ward off attention from anyone but a select demographic.
