News: Iwata Explains Storage Solution

Posted by Aaron Clegg - Oct 4th 2008 15:07

Translated directly from the Japanese press conference, Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata summarised the SD card-based storage solution heading to Wii next year.

It was a long time coming, but Nintendo's plans for appeasing Wii owners exhausted of emptying the fridge have finally been confirmed. Rather than release a hard drive, the simple plan is to allow downloaders to fully utilise SD cards, as if it were merely a memory card. The full translation of Iwata's speech regarding the matter is as follows:

"We will make it so that, when there is not enough room on the Wii's internal memory, you will be able to purchase and download Virtual Console and WiiWare software directly from the Shopping Channel to an SD memory card. We will also make it so that you will need to go through just one process in order to transfer Virtual Console or WiiWare software stored on an SD card to the Wii console and then be able to play it. We would like to deal with this issue utilizing two methods. Since the updates to realize these new structures will require significant revisions to the Wii system, and these changes need to be made by taking care of a variety of different angles, this method will become effective beginning next spring. For some of you, this may be considered late. But please know that we really appreciate your cooperation and understanding. We are working hard so we can begin the service as soon as possible."

So it seems not even Nintendo HQ could escape the wrath (internet forum-based wrath, of course) of scores of scorn Wii owners. All that matters is that a solution is coming, and it will only require a simple firmware update.

By the sounds of it, it's not gonna be a "simple" firmware update if they're gonna have to rewrite chunks of the system.

It's certainly good to know they're doing something about it, though.

I'm not too optimistic about this really, considering that copying one of my VC games to my SD card took longer than the initial download ^^;

Then again, I'm one of those who still haven't used all of my Wii's memory yet. So for me, it doesn't really matter until I do... ;>_>

If you try out homebrew on your wii, you could see that the front SD transfer rates are really high. (The official Wii software limits it's speed, so I think that it's one of the points where Nintendo will be improving their firmware. One other point will be SDHC, I think.)

I'm still amazed at how short sighted nintendo were when they didn't include this option in the first place. Fair enough keep the system price down by only giving us half a gig memory if you have to, but surely at some point they realised all these games and wii ware they had in mind were going to need more space at some point.

Out of the big three... Nintendo seems kinda like the retarded baby, the very creative and colourful retarded baby, but a slow baby none the less.

The fact they constantly need things spelt out to them by everyone else is rediculous "look, your hard drive is to small, look, your cartridges are too small, look, your online system is munted, look, you purple cube is a purple cube!"

Seriously, the fact Nintendo can continue on with thier blind stupidity indefinetly says something about the monopoly these corporations seem to be holding.

You know, comments like that seem to come off thinking that
a) this stuff is easy.
b) the other consoles dont have simerla stupiditys.

Microsoft hasnt even got a webbrowser on their console, and yet they are constantly said to have the best online service. Sony have taken 3 generations to release people might want more then 2 player games.

And STOP FRELLING critising Carts. This one really gets on my tits frankly.

If it wasnt for Nintendo choosing "too small" carts you ignorant idiots wouldnt have had Ocarina of Time.
That type of game was IMPOSSIBLE on slow optical media at that time. Streaming to that extent just could not be done.
So this "retarded babys" choice for carts for the N64 resulted in one of the most criticaly acclaimed games of all time.

I'd have that over the ps1's fmv sequences any day.

Everythings a pro and a con. And the grass does allways look greener.
But when you act like Nintendo...the company producing some of the best games ever made....the company with whats probably going to be the most successfull console ever made.....when you call them a retarded baby, it only reflexs just how arrogant Nintendo fans can be.

Nintendo didnt think 500MB would be enough.
They thought, it seems wrongly, that people wouldnt need 500MB of games *at the same time*

"(The official Wii software limits it's speed, so I think that it's one of the points where Nintendo will be improving their firmware. One other point will be SDHC, I think.)"

The first point yes. They have said this, I suspect its Nintendos console-tieing DRM slowing it down and they will fix this.

The second point no. SDHC is a hardware change.

People have always been saying Nintendo is slow and behind with technology, they keep doing stupid things etc. etc.
But somehow they seem to manage, and do quite well too.
I think the critics should finally realise that they just maybe aren't the best business or technology advisors they would like to be.
Maybe, just maybe, Nintendo actually had a reason for their decision.

wait what, there was a reason they didn't fix the storage problem? They wanted us to be unable to download thier games? They wanted to lose sales? They wanted to piss of thier consumers?

Somehow that doesn't make them sound any more intelligent...

Well, honestly I think this is a lazy attempt. Because we have to buy the 'Hard-drive', and I think it will be quite annoying having to load off the SD card and save stuff back onto it.

I believe Nintendo could have made the Wii quite better from the beginning. No DVD player... that sucks. No 'media player channel' (play mp3's, some video formats eg wmv)... that sucks. No use of USB flash drives (this could have been an alternative solution, buy a mini usb hard drive).

A lot of things Nintendo should have had (in my opinion) in the Wii to make it more modernised from the GC.

That isn't a soultion so its not all that matters. How does it solve anything. Only solution via the SD card is to allow playing games off of it without having to trasnfer games on the limited wii hdd.

This makes the process a little faster it has solved nothing...i'm rather pissed.

Thing is they are harming themselves..it's offputting many alot of games...as the process of moving games is just annoying.

GJ Nintendo.

I find people moaning about storage space more annoying to be honest.
Play the Game, Complete it, Delete it.

i can't understand why my wii front end has about 5 pages, but i've managed to fill one and a half and my memory is full.

SD support will only make things easier for the pirates i'm afraid.
