News: Galaxy, Twilight Princess Too 'Conservative'

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto thinks that Mario Galaxy and Zelda: Twilight Princess weren't revolutionary enough...

Despite universally high critical praise, Nintendo gaming legend Shigeru Miyamoto has said he thinks the latest in the Mario and Zelda franchises did not go far enough. Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, he said:

What I’ve been saying to our development teams recently is that “Twilight Princess” was not a bad game, by any means. But, still, it felt like there was something missing. And while, personally, I feel like “Super Mario Galaxy” was able to do some things that were very new and were very unique, at the same time, from another perspective, certain elements of it do feel somewhat conservative in terms of how far we branched out with design. And so this is something I’ve been talking to both of those teams about.

Of course, as is customary with Nintendo, it’s very rare that we are able to announce any games until they’re ready for release, but I can say that these are themes that both of those teams are taking into account and the hope is that for both of those franchises, when we do release the next installments of the “Zelda” [franchise] or maybe the next “Galaxy,” hopefully they will feel newer and fresher than their most recent versions.

We adored both titles... which only makes us more excited about what could be to come in the future! For more comments from the man himself, check out the full interview here.

Makes you excited, makes me somewhat concerned. I hope they don't try to mess with it too much.

I think its when Nintendo mess with things that they become revolutionary and end up being more than we ever could have imagined. Im looking forward to see what Mr Miyamotos teams is working on, time will tell i guess but it is very exciting to be a nintendo gamer right now.

Mario Galaxy was great though!

I'm quietly confident in Miyamoto. As far as I can see, he's known what he was doing every time he came up with a new concept, and we never saw a half-hearted attempt.

(But please, can you make the next Zelda cel-shaded?? I'll be your bestest friend Shigsy!)

Personally I prefer the mature games, but I dont mind cel as long as it's not like WW

I've been saying this for ages, both titles were distinctly unrevolutionary and a shadow of their past incarnations, I get a weird feeling more people will be inclined to agree with me now.

I'd actually like to see a cel-shaded Galaxy 2, would look lovely.

Galaxy only made the mistake of repeating itself too many times.

All the hungry lumas would look the same, say the same, and their levels would only yield one star.

All the letters from the princess would say the same, and include the same five 1UPs.

"I think its when Nintendo mess with things that they become revolutionary and end up being more than we ever could have imagined."

...Huh. I never actually thought about it that way. I like that way of looking at it, it's much more optimistic than my way. =P

I really cant think of anythin that the Zelda team could of done better. I really enjoyed Twilight Princess.

I agree with cel-shading but I think it looks better on the DS than the Wii.

As long as the next Zelda instalment isnt a a fill-in title trying to explain loose ends of un-answered questions and storys in the previous games with no explination.

I hate games like that...lol..

(wow my first big post, guess I went overboard abit ^_^;)

Personally I think it's because he's been 're-hashing' the same series with little to no change in every game.

@ Arab_freak,
I play a lot of games, yet I'd be hard pressed to mention more than a select few series, that have managed to keep reinventing themselves as well as Zelda and Mario have.

Only problem I felt with TP was that Ganondorf didn't quite feel like the main villain. Not like in OoT or even WW. He kinda felt tacked on in some way. And the Link-Zelda-Ganondorf dynamic wasn't there at all...

It kinda felt like Midna was the main hero and Link was just tagging along for fun. At least in the cutscenes with Zelda or Ganondorf...

No cell-shading please! I'm playing TP on the GC and I'm really enjoying the game, I'm in the Occoo sky island now. I feel it's easily there along with Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4 as the best games for the Cube. On the other hand, I thought Wind Waker looked way too kiddie and gameplay was boring and annoying too, I played it for about an hour or two and didn't like it that much.

@ Leo

Maybe you didn't know, but TP is cel-shaded. For that matter, contrary to popular belief PH isn't. Well, I don't think so anyway. I can't remember seeing any cel-shaded effects. It's only the art style that's the same. Art style and graphics are too completely different things.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind seeing a new toon-shaded Zelda, so long as it's based on an art style that doesn't remind us of TWW too much. TWW Link have been done to death!

But I'd prefer an entirely new direction. As for realistic graphics, I don't understand those of you who moan about it. You should know that Nintendo is NEVER going to use the same style thrice.

If the next game is realistic the game on the next console is unlikely to have realistic graphics. The Wii does only have slightly better graphics than the original X-box because it's focused heavily on innovation. With the next console Nintendo will have no choice but to drastically improve the graphical capability.

So, do you want your realistic game now or later, when it's actually going to make some difference?

Galaxy was just right if you ask me.

Zelda though, yeah. It didn't feel new or as if that much effort had gone into it - just felt like OoT had been tarted up and swapped around a bit, there was nothing really new there.

Here is the one thing to remember, Twilight Princess was originally meant for GC, not Wii so it was obviously not revolutionary enough for Wii standards. The Wii controls for example were tacked on at the end of development near enough.

Galaxy was designed for Wii, so had new things added to it.

I think Galaxy was amazing - but I think that Twilight princess was basically Ocarina of time + a dog.

I think some of you need to go back and play Ocarina.
While TP was no where near that revolutionary, theres still quite a lot of differences between them.
No magic in TP, for instance. *Much* better fighting mechcanics too. Also a hell of a lot better storytelling. OoT was revolutionary, but in terms of direction and story it was very crude by todays standards.

TP is not "Ocarina+Dog"
A better comparison would be MarioKart <> MarioKartDS.
Does nothing revolutionary, but takes all the best bits and adds and much as they possible can.

The shear amount of content and attention to detail in TP is staggering.

" With the next console Nintendo will have no choice but to drastically improve the graphical capability."

I hope not.
The Wiimote is great, but theres still a lot more that can be done with it.

I'd also easily give up better graphics for having headtracked viewpoints as standard.

TP isn't revolutionary at all. It's a great game, one of my top 5 games ever, but it's by no means revolutionary. Was there ever any "doubt", here?

As for Galaxy, indeed, it was the same format as always, with a few new spins on it. Then again, I ask, does that make it a bad game? Hell fucking no. It's brilliant!

I just can't see what the big surprise is about SM saying they weren't revolutionary... because it's quite a bit obvious they weren't. oO

"Galaxy was designed for Wii, so had new things added to it."

I think the core of Galaxy was revolutionary enough without any wii-controller use at all.
The controller helped a few places, but I dont think the game would have been less revolutionary without it.

Frankly, I think it would be a very bad move for Nintendo to even start working on another mario game yet.
1 per generation is just fine by me.

Zelda I would like them to take some direction changes well, but not because the internet is yelling at them :p

Heres my 10 suggestions anyway;

1) I want puzzles to be a bit less item-based, and more "what you find lying about based".
Zack & Wiki I think is a perfect example of how inteligent Zelda puzzles could be.

2) Make the gameworld more unpredictable to explore. By all means have massive bose's, dungoens, themed areas of all shapes and sizes.....but *dont* make me expect them.
Ditch the structure. No well laid out boss-keys or paturn. I want to be utterly supprised when I find a new dungoen.

3) Enemys that can chase me from room to room. Just occasionaly. Freak the player out a bit!

4) Wiimote/Motionplus as sword...obvious, but use it for puzzles as well as fighting. (personaly, I think carving symbals into rocks could be a good magic system).

5) More charecters like Midna, less like Navi.

6) No ganon. Please. TP for a minute looked like it might have an original enemy...but then...back to the old ginger one. Lets not have the normal enemy k? My favorate zelda story was Majoras Mask.

7) Lets go a bit further with Link's transportion. I think everyone likes horseriding...but this is a fantasy setting, why not have a more unique beast next time? Purhaps one that gains abilitys over the course of the game? (like flight, or the ability dig tunnels into the earth...like flying underground )

8) That said, a small dungoen done completely on horseback would be fun :p

9) Steampunk. Make the world more steampunk.
Twlight princess moved a little in that direction, I'd like moreso.

10) Keep the ghibli-vib. Yeah, I can spot where those robot and flying castle designs are getting their inspiration. Keep going, just dont get sued.

"I just can't see what the big surprise is about SM saying they weren't revolutionary..."

But galaxy *was* revolutionary :?
First platform game I played with non-liner gravity plans.
That counts as revolutionary, imho.

(note, I am aware some 2D platforms had reverse-gravity flips, but thats still liner really)
