News: 'Major Online Game' To Abolish Friend Codes

Posted by Aaron Clegg - Jan 13th 2009 17:42

In a recent podcast, the team over at IGN spoke of an upcoming Wii game which will say no to Nintendo's lamented code system...

While Friend Codes have remained the bane of many gamers' lives for a while now, we're all going to have to accept that they're staying for the time being. However, that's not to suggest 3rd parties can't make their way around them if they do so wish.

In the latest podcast over at the IGN Nintendo team, Editor-in-Chief Matt Casamassina let slip of an upcoming third-party Wii game that would release in 2009 which would not use friend codes, for the reason that the developer simply did not want to utilise them. The game being referred to has already been announced, and is allegedly a "major online title".

No official confirmation of which game will leap-frog Nintendo's infamous safety-system, or how in fact it will do it, but speculation is already rife that it could be High Voltage's already-acclaimed FPS, The Conduit.

What are your thoughts on Nintendo's Friend Code system?

It wouldn't be the first one... Honestly I'd be alright with FCs if it's just use the Wii code for all games.

What do EA use for their sports games? I notice their online but don't use Nintendo's WFC

They use an EA Nation gamertag thing that you just swap with others to add to your friends list.

Don't think it's the conduit. Believe they already stated they'd be using them. Perhaps it's something like Monster Hunter 3. I'd class that as a major online game for the Wii.

Theres nothing wrong with the friend codes themselfs.
The problem is *seperate* codes for some games.

If friendcodes were universal....like a phonenumber...it wouldnt be a big deal.

It's about time we saw the Friend Codes go, it only makes playing online more complicated.

Surely it's The Conduit. Besides, didn't I see an article here about how it's developers didn't want FCs?

Whatever Nintendo does, it's all still very bleak compared to the excellent XBox Live service. Good to see a game is finally ditching the friendcodes though. I hope it's the start of a trend.

lol @ Sol, it would be so funny if Nintendo was the first to dump their own system.

Im thinking it would be Monster Hunter, having seen how it operates on the PSP/PS2 i doubt the developers would like using two lots of codes. He did say he wanted it to be easy for people to connect to and well, it wouldnt be if it shipped using two lots of codes.

Would be nice if all it takes is one big publisher shafting Nintendo's system, and everyone else would be free to follow suit.

Shooters are not favorite thing to play online, though, so hopefully something besides The Conduit will shape up too. :)

Nintendo dosnt always use Frendcodes directly as such, Metroid Corruption use's the Wii's address book to swap those green credit thingys.
