News: Latest Animal Crossing DLC Released

Posted by Tom "Tphi" Phillips - May 6th 2009 16:57

An exclusive new item for your Animal Crossing town is now available...

For ten days (May 5th - May 15th), a brand new piece of downloadable content is available for owners of Animal Crossing: Let's Go To The City! (or City Folk, if you're reading this from outside Europe). It's a cute replica of the Animal Crossing bus which takes you from your town to the City!

Simply be connected to the internet and have the WiiConnect24 function turned on in the game to receive this special gift from Nintendo!

This might be the very first time Nintendo's actually making proper use of WiiConnect24 (besides the messaging system), although even this is questionable.

I doubt that WiiConnect24 currently offers anything that "standard downloads" don't offer. I mean, what's the difference between seeing a new bus when you turn on the game and seeing that there's a new bus to be downloaded and seeing it 15 seconds after turning on the game.

As far as I can see there's two powerful uses of WiiConnect24:

- Pushing large downloads
- Notifications

The first point is obvious. If a download is large and takes lots of time, it's better to have it pushed when I'm not playing rather than waiting for it while my console's turned on (and I'd rather be playing a game). However, the point is moot since the Wii can't even store significantly large downloads. Also, with today's broadband connections, even large downloads become relatively small.

The second point is more interesting. When I'm not playing my Wii I want it to tell me when my friend turned on theirs, or when they've logged in to an online game (of Mario Kart for example). Make the disc drive glow blue when my friend is playing Mario Kart, so that when I see the blue glow, I can turn on my Wii and instantly join him in the game. That's useful stuff for WiiConnect24.

Having a model of a bus pushed to my Wii, which could just as easily be done at the moment when I turn the Wii or even the game itself on, is not really added functionality.

Sorry for this rant, but I'm one of the few people without a blog and I have to vent it somewhere :-)
