News: Reggie Asks Gamers What They Want

Posted by Tom "Tphi" Phillips - Jun 20th 2009 14:39

Suggest a Nintendo franchise and developer to Reggie Fils-Aime, and he'll do the rest. Possibly.

Speaking to Kotaku, Nintendo of America's head honcho Reggie Fils-Aime has asked gamers for their input. "In the same vein of Team Ninja working with Nintendo to re-imagine Metroid," he asked, "what other developer they'd like to see partner and collaborate with Nintendo? And on what franchise?"

With Team Ninja working on Metroid: Other M, a title which seemingly has a new take on the series' gameplay, what other franchises would you like to see in a fresh light? Final Fantasy's Square-Enix team on the next Paper Mario? Burnout's Criterion taking on Mario Kart?

Surely there can be no higher power on Earth than Reggie who could make these things happen...

Mh... I wonder how Prope would make a Kirby game. ^^

Also, a collaboration with the SEGA team(s) who made the Ecco the Dolphin games would be cool, I would like to play a new Ecco game! ^^

Bethesda with Kid Icarus. I'd prefer only the Zelda team do 3D zelda games. Also, Rockstar with Mario... (only joking).

How about we see Nintendo themselves working on some new quality IPs (no Wii Music 2 please).

What people want but cant have;
Games of perfect quality made every 6 months, rather then 3 years. Oh, and all in existing franchises....nothing scary like ExcitaBots which we wont buy despite reviews -_-

Realistic requests;

* Give 3rd partys some 2nd-tier games to work on.
Specificaly, AC could do another FZero.

* Give Retro what they need to do what they want.

* Golden Sun Wii please :) (and, honestly, a 2D worldmap would be fine...just make it a massive pretty painting)

* PUSH some games more. Another Code Wii could appeal to adventure gamers and new gamers alike.

* Get Silicone Knights back. Eternal Darkness 2 could be -fantastic- on the Wii.

* Four Swords DS. Really, this is a no-brainer!

-

And no Zelda RPG -arg-.
Zelda IS NOT and should not EVER be an RPG.
The franchise needs more puzzles and interaction with the enviroment, not less replaced with mindless stats.

I'm not sure if Sega have the same team (AV) to make another F-Zero but this and Staf Fox need decent updates, especially the latter. We've not had a really good Star Fox game since the N64 game.

And yeah, get a good team/developer to do Kid Icarus. We've had Punch Out!! updated so another oldie would be great.

Kojima can stay away from Nintendo's stuff. He's one of the most overrated developers in the world. He can f**k off

A sequel to "Skies of Arcardia" would be one of my wishes :)
And also a new Lufia game - for the Wii; not for a handheld. With 2D movement - like in the older games - but 3D graphics. Otherwise pretty much the same gameplay concept as in Lufia Rise of the Sinistrals (maybe a few improvements/changes).
In that manner I also agree with DarkFlame regarding a Golden Sun Wii game.

I second that, a sequal to Skies of Arcadia would be serious; keeping on topic, Sega AV and F-Zero would make alot of gamers happy.

@Yulaw
Kojima overrated... really?! Metal Gear and ZoE?!!

Hmmm...

This seems like a stunt to regain a footing with a few people calling themselves "hardcore gamers."

Like all other audiences, gamers don't know what they want, but they sure like to THINK they do.

But hey, they can't do anything much more crazy than letting Team Ninja make a Metroid game anyway, so let's run with it;

2D Boy makes a new Balloon Fight!

It wouldn't be to my taste, but Blizzard + Pokemon + MMO = license to print money.

I'd rather someone else like criterion take on F-Zero than AV, as quality as the product was, I felt the difficulty was soul destroying.

I'd rather see the opposite, have Nintendo take on someone else's franchise.. like say, Nintendo developing a 3D sonic or megaman game.

"Zelda IS NOT and should not EVER be an RPG."

Zelda is a ROLE-PLAYING game, and have always been so. It's extremely narrow-minded, and outright insulting to the genre, to think that RPGs are all about stats and level-ups.

Everything it needs to qualify as a real RPG is a silent protagonist that you can name yourself (check), an Overworld (check), a character development system (Heart Pieces, so check), and equipment (check). That's all that I can think of off the top of my head.

Oh, and according to Miyamoto Zelda is an RPG series. I should also point out the reason why Link is called, well, Link. He's the link between the player and the game.

Combine two sides of the gaming coin to get the ULTIMATE game. Combine the dev of the most critically acclaimed game of all time by editorial gamers which is OOT (EAD) and the most critically acclaimed game of all time by users which is FFVII (Square, now Square Enix) and make the ULTIMATE Zelda game.

Link will actually kill innocent people in this game under the possession of Ganondorf, which will make Aeris's death look like a mere afterthought in comparison and the final boss (Ganondorf) will no longer be a pushover and will resemble Sepiroth in both structure and difficulty (i.e. takes 30+ minutes to beat him in several forms).

The Wii needs a good fighting game. A Wii exclusive, regular fighting Soul Calibur (no crappy "Soul Calibur Legends"), with a deep story and elements of adventure and even strategy. Combine the Fire Emblem team with the Soul Calibur team and put appearances of fitting Fire Emblem characters into the game. Also put Link in the game at some point in the adventure mode, like in the GameCube Soul Calibur, and make him, as well as the Fire Emblem characters, as a playable character. Bring Siegfried Schtauffen (Nightmare) into the game with a story surrounding how he became how he is, and his fight to become normal, again. Despite the deep story, the game will mainly focus on the fighting, and it will be recommended to play the game with the "classic" controller.

What I think Nintendo need to do is work on there online capabilities and make some very fun and addictive multiplayer games also with the help of third party developers and network techs to broaden there servers so they will no longer have bandwidth issues (lag and being disconnected from games). They need there own version of Xbox live imo and am sure Nintendo could pull something interesting out of the bag.

Auntnadia has a good image of Valve working with them which I think is a great idea as ages ago I said to my brother and mates that Counter-Strike would be good on DS but now with Wii around would be great if developed right with Wii motion plus. Left 4 Dead I would like to see but not sure if its possible with the Wii's hardware (I think it might be, Half Life 2 and Doom 3 got developed on the original Xbox which was astonishing at the time).

Another thing is RARE were great with Nintendo and should still be making games for them. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark would be brilliant on Wii (Perfect Dark is heading for Xbox Live arcade at some point).

There are so many possibilities what Nintendo could do.

why does everybody want rare?? they were a great studio when nintendo had them, but that was a long time ago.

compared to the classic games mentioned by a few above, rares attempts since then have been mediocre at their best.

rare just don't have that extra something required to make the game of my dreams.
Pod Says:

That's harsh, Nadia, Rare was broken apart primarily because of the split with Nintendo, and subsequent take-over by Microsoft.

The Stampers aren't around anymore, but Rare is an incredibly inventive and resourceful developer. Their ability to get the best performance out of a system is simply unmatched, which is still apparent from Viva Pińata on the DS, which also happens to play quite well.

Heck, if any game looked as good on Wii as Star Fox Adventures did seven years ago on GameCube...
Amazingandy87 Says:

The thing with RARE is that a lot of the original staff went to form Free Radical (which are now Crytek UK) the team that made Goldeneye and Perfect Dark worked on the Timesplitters games which got good reviews from game media websites/magazines and now looks like that that series may not be coming back (don't hold me on that cos you never know). But now knowing that they have now become Crytek imagine having certain games they made in the past with the technology they have now, Cryengine 3 is in development.

To be honest though RARE have not been as successful as they once were back in the N64 days (apart from possibly Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts and maybe a few others).

1) Rockstar North (ex DMA) Body Harvest REMAKE & Silicon Valley 2 (no remake on this one, reimagining or sequel will be better)
2)Sucker Punch - Rocket 2 (yeah I dream) and some Sly ports
3)Obviously Factor 5 - Fox & Pilotwings (please no more star wars games)
4)Get AV back (yakuza games really suck gameplay wise) for another F-Zero
5)Metal Gear Solid 2 port (no preferrence)
6)Square - Remake of FF6 on the DS, Seiken 3 PLEASE and last but not least Trigger 2
7)Here is a trully impossible one, Silicon Knights - The ORIGINAL Too Human game.

"Pokemon RPG"

There will be too many lawsuits from angry parents, I think this will never ever happen.

Nibris & Data Design - Ninjabread man 2

this topic never ends really

oh also, how about Animal Crossing Life in the Big City? This feels like a natural progression, having more stuff to do in the city and of course taking the bus (train whatever) to go to the countryside do to fishing/bug catching etc) Also Nintendo if you make another AC game, how about using either offline or even online cities/villages from around the world so that you could go and see how they celebrate their region specific holidays? That sounds like an idea taken DIRECTLY from the Nintendo book of logic. Just keep the war holidays out and you will be fine. Also why do you keep limiting the number of events? AC GC had a ton of special days, the other two editions feel plain in comparison.

Is it me or am I seeing Nintendo gradually move over their titles to other developers? I know this happened back during the Gamecube/GBA era but it's seems to be increasing this generation.
