News: Galaxy 2 To Appeal More To Veteran Gamers

Posted by Aaron Clegg - Jul 11th 2009 19:48

Mario's big daddy Miyamoto-san explains that Galaxy 2 will be geared more to the experienced gamer...

Well what can be said about Super Mario Galaxy? Arguably the best game to release so far in this generation and certainly the most finely-crafted Wii gem. If there was one thing that a select few of critics had to say against the game's favour though, it was that the game could have offered something more in the way of a challenge to experienced players (though we at N-Europe suspect those people never did achieve the 241 Stars count).

But even those critics have one more reason to be hyped for the sequel, as general director and all-round demi-god Shigeru Miyamoto has gone on record with Nintendo Power to promise veteran players more of a challenge with Galaxy 2.

“I do believe that there is a lot here to appeal to the more veteran and more experienced gamers, and I think it’s a title that they will obviously enjoy, but I really took it into consideration and tried to do our best to create a game that’s accessible to new gamers as well. And, you know, we also built it with consideration that we believe that people who played through the first Mario Galaxy have become better players.”

With more focus on physics and time-based puzzles as well as the inclusion of Yoshi, we can certainly imagine Miyamoto-san can deliver a game that not only offers a tougher difficulty than the original Galaxy, but also an even more engrossing title all round. We have every faith in Nintendo to do the unthinkable and trump Wii's current magnum opus.

But what do you think? Did Galaxy need a steeper difficulty and are you now more pumped for the sequel? Be sure to leave your comments below...

Of course I am!
I found the difficulty in Galaxy pretty even for any kind of player, but if Galaxy 2 is offering me something more difficult, then awesome!

I found some Stars in Mario Galaxy REALLY difficult to get. I mean, I was putting my hair out over them. I did eventually get all 242 Stars, but it actually didn't take me all that long. I still love the game and consider it to be my favourite, but if its sequel is more of a challenge, bring it on. Can't wait. =D

I agree with both of the comments above - there was a very even learning curve, never too steep, yet as Cipher mentioned, some were ridiculously difficult to get! I really can't wait for this, though was slightly disappointed by the mentions of a lack of story a few weeks ago...

Wait a minute, I thought there were only 121 stars in the game..
60 to finish the story
60 to get Luigi
and then one extra star at 'the festival'..

Ams I missing something here, I KNOW I've found all of them,....the hardest one for me was the galaxy were you had to collect all the purple coins on an old-skool luigi platform....

I just want luigi in it. MAYBEEEE 2 player story co-op? mario and luigi side by side? doing puzzles you cant do alone?

hmmmmmm that would be awesome :$

Needs to play more like 64 in the way of the hub, and not being so linearly limited, specifically limited(ie only able to get the star in question) and secret/hard stars should stay and be secret/hard.

lol

Fused, what do you think you get Luigi for? :P

Anyway, I think a lot of people are "fooled" into thinking the game is easier than it really is simply because you can have many lives. But think about it, you die loads of times in Galaxy, just because you don't see a game over screen it doesn't mean you didn't lose, it just means you're not forced into repeating a load of stuff and losing your progress.

As a serious mario vet, I flew through alot of the game, but it was always engaging and there really were some damn tricky parts in there too. Give Galaxy to anyone not totally versed in the 3D platforming concept and the game will completely crush them.

There's one stage in this that almost had me snapping a wiimote, I think more than a few of you can recall the horrors of Luigi's Purple Coins.

ahhh, that brings back some lost memories... and they're not good ones... :)
so, is it 241 or 242 stars? do you get the extra star as Luigi as well? obviously I didn't play the game twice through... too afraid of the horrors of Luigi's Purple Coins...

I must add though, once i'd beaten the Luigi coins challenge, I totally felt like billy badass and really felt my skills had improved, I went on to beat the stage for a friend later on too.

If galaxy 2 is tougher and assuming that players have come prepared from playing the first as Shigsy says, I simply can't wait.

Bring. It. On.

@Woozydrone - Shigsy has near enough confirmed that 'there will be cake' so hopefully it's not a lie. :P

Personally I want a better hub, it's not that SMG's hub wasn't imaginative, because it was, the whole space-rocket / home / hub thing was cool but it just didn't feel as epic when you compare it to previous hubs, now everything is going to pale into insignificance when compared to Peach's Castle but even SMS's hub town world of Isle Delfino was better than SMG's... :/

Other than the hub, the ability to get certain stars in a different order / secret stars would be welcomed, there were secret stars in SMG but not like in SM64.

This last one is a big ask but co-op? in a 3D Mario game? yes please... if it can work then do eeet! if not then meh... we'll live without it... again... >.>

That's about it though, Nintendo seems to be taking everything else on-board so I'm not even the least bit worried about SMG2, I just can't wait to play it. :)

I agree with Miyamoto here. In fact, all games should be like this. Easy to pick up, hard to master.

Doubt we'll get coop, no way they can output those graphics in split screen.

They should take a leaf out of Banjo Kazooie from the N64, make the levels more free-form! No selecting crap when you enter, just let us go in and find what we need to find by our selves. Of course, that probably worked better in BK as the levels were larger and more open to exploration...

@PhilHH: There are 242. You get 120 with Mario, then 120 with Luigi, then you can get the 121st star with both characters, so there are 242. =)

Galaxy, imho, was utterly perfect difficulty wise.
It never board me with easyness, and had plenty of challange despite being very accessible.

Simply put, all the really had stuff was optional.

My only request for MarioGalaxy2...my only, small, request, is simply to have a better Hub-system.
The spaceship thingy was no where near as interesting as the castle in Mario64.
Lets have a small planet to explore instead. (packed with secrets).

I love Super Mario Galaxy and can't wait for the second. But I have to say, I think I'm looking more forward to NSMB Wii simply because its having a 2D Mario game on the TV again for the first time in 14 years.

I'll be getting both

I can't say I agree when people say that they want an explorable hub like in 64 like it's automatically better than a non-explorable one.

I'm not saying you can't prefer one to another, that's not my point, that's down to opinion, my point is that nowadays explorable/sandbox levels are automatically treated like a plus and I don't like that. Galaxy's hub was meant to be just a way to choose the levels, nothing more.
It's a way to make the levels accessible faster without having to transverse a long area and of course it's a way of not using the whole theme of having to find the levels in every 3D Mario game. Not to mention that it's closer to the old 2D Marios.

It's not that, in an objective way, it's better or worse than 64/Sunshine hubs, it's just apples and oranges.

Also, the co-op in Galaxy was a very overlooked feature, but it was freaking awesome, anyway could jump in at any time and help out or get in the way, it was really fun.

If they leave out the prankster comets and make an appearance of Bouldergeist, I'm happy :) A better hub would be good too

By that logic, you might as well have a list of levels you just select from a menu.

A lot of gamers like exploring and finding secrets.
Id go so far as to say, as a Nintendo gamer, your in the minority if that isnt the case for you.

In fact, lets reverse the question;

What is the downside of an explorable hub like Mario64's castle? What makes that worse, in your mind?

Thats exactly how I feel, I loved the huge worlds from banjo kazooie and all of the exploration that they entailed; you could argue that this element was watered down a bit in galaxy so that the precious casual gamers didnt get lost and give up.

No, because it was identical in the last two mario games as well.
Both Sunshine and Mario64 also had the mission-structure.

When I entered the garden I thought I was going to be able to run around and explore like bobombs battlefield ......but alas I hit the wall. Like most of the comments I wasnt excited about the linear nature of galaxy. I also thought the camera was too panned back most of the time taking away from the feeling of emersion, especially on the satellite planet type stages. Shoot me but I preferred sunshine.
