News: Miyamoto Talks MotionPlus In Zelda

Posted by Aaron Clegg - Nov 3rd 2009 19:07

Miyamoto-san divulges sweet, sweet hints on how Wii's next Zelda title will implement MotionPlus...

As you may have guessed by the regularity of him appearing the news lately, when Shigeru Miyamoto speaks, we listen.

The veteran game designer has dropped some hints about his vision for the next main Legend of Zelda game on Wii, and by doing so has practically confirmed MotionPlus support is a go-ahead.

"About MotionPlus. We're implementing it so that players can feel like they themselves are holding the sword. In the previous Zelda (Twilight Princess) the targeting was based on the IR pointer. This time however, we'll be using MotionPlus for a variety of more convenient targeting systems that will allow for more pleasant gameplay."

Back at E3, Miyamoto implied he would like to see MotionPlus as compulsary in Zelda Wii, and would make it so if the peripheral was successful in the marketplace.

In similar news, Miyamoto-san also commented on this Christmas' big DS game - The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. He has some comforting words for anyone worried that Spirit Tracks will be in soe way dumbed down or too easy.

"[Spirit Tracks] will be really fun. It's turning out to be rather challenging. Many of our Japanese customers were introduced to the Zelda series with Phantom Hourglass, and ST could prove to be kind of hard for them, but I thought we'd show them what Zelda is really made of this time around. So it's turning into quite a unique title. I've managed to gather quite a few creative team members for Zelda Spirit Tracks, so I'd like Zelda Wii to also enjoy creative development as much as possible."

Spirit Tracks releases in Europe on December 11th.

Not sure about this.. Does this mean you have to buy the MotionPlus to play the upcoming Zelda or will they feature so you can play with the regualer Wiimote and Nunchuk?

I like the idea, but having played Zelda games since Zelda II on the NES, I feel most comfortable with regualer non-motion controls and would hate to not have this option anymore..

Well I would embrace it as long as its done right. And I have no reason to doubt nintendo as far as "controls done right" is concerned.

But Dreamtide... you can't really expect Nintendo to create a game for the Wii and not use motion controls? It'd be a massive step back, simply because the motion controls are the 'next step' in controls for nintendo.

I'm all for MotionPlus, but only if it is mandatory, and the mechanics and challenges arebuilt around it.

In Twilight Princess I found myself toggling off pointer aiming, as that was the only way to get rid of the useless on-screen fairy, and I desired very much that I could just swing my sword by button press, as was an option in the demo I played.

Yes, motion plus HAS to be required to be used decently.
WiiSports Resort sword fighting was superb and gave a real taste for Zelda. It was hard too, not just reactions, but needing quick aiming at later levels.
Id love to see that developed more and poured into Zelda. Slashing away half a dozen small enemys in one sweep, or taking your time to parry a advanced enemy.

To me, its a given.
What I really want though, that I'm not sure they will do, is use it for puzzles.
Zack and Wiki had some wonderfull puzzles that motion controlled really helped with. Id love to see that taken further with Zelda and motion plus.

Id also like to see the return of magic...specifically carving runes in rocks anywhere you like with your sword, making things appear from them.

The last Zelda game on the Wii was really a shoehorned mirrored Gamecube version with Wii controls slapped on.

I hope that this game with motion plus can push the Zelda series further. Hope Nintendo can make the control set up easy to use for left or righthanded players. Link was traditionally left handed after all.

Theres nothing remotely shoehorned about Twlight Princess.
It was a late gamecube game that made sense to also release on the Wii.
It wasn't rushed for either release. Given the fact the Wii is, hardware wise, basically the same chipset as the gamecube, its hardly surprising either. Developers shoe-horn more much more stuff to get their 360/PS3 releases working on both systems.

And you don't "slap something on" when you have almost a year. Wii control's were used sparingly, true, but not rushed.
Thankfully, I'm glade they arnt used much. They add very well to fishing and using arrows. But without MP I dont think too much else would have been nice.

Well, I have a motion plus attachment so why should I worry? I can only applaud for games that use Motion Plus. Red Steel 2's sword fighting looks impressive. I'm sure Nintendo can do just as good with Zelda.

Legend of Zelda - 3000. Dramatic change of setting in futuristic setting with HI DEF graphics, blood and voice acting (Excluding Link) will be the only way the series will move forward. Motion + will not be enough to save this game from being heavily criticised by editorial reviews for recycling content of the previous games without bringing anything new other than waggle...

I have to agree with Toots. We'll have to put our trust in Miyamoto and Ninty...

Have faith.

Sol is just taking the mickey at this stage. I'm all for motionplus in the next Zelda. I loved the pointer aiming in TP, (not to mention the rest of the game), and I'm hoping the next one will be even better.

Indeed.
Musnt actually make any gameplay changes, we must only make it darker, more bloody, thats truely how to evolve games to modern standards.

I'm sorry, but how will blood "evolve" games to modern standards?

Clearance: So I'm guessing that Darkflame is using sarcasm, but I would like for Sol to answer my previous question :)

I would like another cel-shaded game with a more classic medieval setting. I'm thinking a lot of humour and warmth, just like in Wind Waker, but in a setting which is closer to 6th century England and the myth of King Arthur, you know, with a lots of knights and woods and that sort of stuff :) I want to walk through a fully realized forest. I want to discover a small castle deep within in that forest and find the king asleep in the throne room. I want to borrow a horse in the stable and ride to the scary part of the woods where a nasty witch is suppose to live.

I don't thing gore and cyberpunk is right for Zelda.

Sol is awesome. I literally scroll thru comments looking for him. You've got to admit, he brings something different to the table... GUARANTEED.

Keep it up sol, the further from the pack you stray, the more awesome you become. It's like a rule or something.

The futuristic Zelda thing has been brought up many times before, though. People usually find it a cool idea at first, but after thinking about it for a while they realize it has very little to do with Zelda.

@ Darkflame

Come on, Twilight Princess was clearly shoehorned onto Wii. It was a Gamecube port. It used waggle for the sword controls for heaven's sake. By waggle I mean it doesn't matter how you manipulate the Wii Remote, you get the same output onscreen. It's essentially digital output in disguise, and it's an utter waste of time, and a bit of an insult to a gamer's intelligence really: getting you to wave your arm about every time you want to use the sword because it's "immersive", when a button press actually gives you just as much control and is infinitely less tiring and tedious.
I'm done now :)

I agree with Major_tom.

And yeah, I'm sure the MotionPlus will work great with Zelda, after all its Nintendo making it. And I will try it out no doubt but don't you guys think they should at least give you the option to play with a regular controller?

Honestly, I don't feel like waving my arms everytime I wanna swing link's sword. I just wanna sit back at push some buttons, at least have th option do to so.
Pod Says:

I see what you're saying Dreamtide,

But I'm going to be egoistic and say no, there shouldn't be the option of playing with a regular controller.
That would mean for the developers to divert way too much energy into adapting battles and puzzles to be solved in two different manners.

Besides, Link doesn't swing his sword THAT much compared to many other video game characters.
