News: Future Bright For Metroid Prime

Always more on the drawing board, says Nintendo...

With a heavily lauded trilogy of main games and two spin-offs, the Metroid Prime sub-series is perhaps the most successful branch of a Nintendo franchise.

But with many of us expecting the series to be laid to rest, Nintendo may have other ideas. Speaking to ONM, Metroid producer Kensuke Tanabe touched on the possibility of more Prime in the future, and specifically whether it would return to DS.

"We are always planning to make new games in the Metroid Prime series. Depending on the timing and the situation, we cannot deny the possibility of realising it on DS or DSi."

Whether we'll see anything in the vein of Hunters again remains to be seen, but it's nice to know that there's always more Prime in the pipeline - even if it is only at an ideas stage.

Would you like to see a return of Metroid Prime. Sound off below...

As far as I'm concerned the Metroid Prime series was rounded off brilliantly. Before I even think about another Metroid Prime game, I just want to know how good Other M is. I'm not saying I DON'T want another Metroid Prime game but I think Other M will take the series back to its roots and that that needs to be given a chance first.

I dont care for Prime, just as long as get more Metroid by Retro in the same rough style at some point :)
Corruption was a brillent end to a trillogy though, so Id rather Retro did something else for awhile, and come back to it later.

Hell, maybe Samus could actually do some bounty hunting next time ;)

Samus isn't an actual bounty hunter, though ;) it's a mistranslation, as was noted in one of these Nintendo interviews that have been floating around lately.

Right now, I would prefer an lateral scrolling, 2D Metroid game for the DS, but I love Metroid Prime so other Metroid games in first person view would be well accepted by me.

I'm also very curious about other M, it could be an interesting mix of 2D and 3D gameplay. :)

Tealovertoma, originally it might have been mistranslated (never heard of it though), but it's more than estabilished that she is a a bounty hunter now.

They should make a 2D metroid in the same vein of New Super Mario Bros for the DS. Works far better than a shallow FPS game.

@Eraser; 'Shallow' and 'FPS' are two things that Metroid Prime is not being that it's a deep and rewarding First Person Adventure game.

The Metroid Prime series is brilliant and succeeded in adding a whole new dimension to the much-loved franchise; I'm rather intrigued to see where Nintendo and Team Ninja take the series next. :)

@ Hellfire:

Sorry for the wall of text, but this is what I was referring to.

"Samus really isn't about the money, a truth that confused the developer -- and me, upon hearing this story -- when it presented Nintendo a gameplay design that appealed to Aran's chosen occupation. "We were looking for something more along the lines of a mission-based game where Samus collected bounties. And for the life of us we couldn't understand why [Nintendo was] being so resistive to that concept. And then over the period of days we came to understand that their definition of a bounty hunter is not a bounty hunter. It is not someone who brings in bad guys for money. That concept was completely outside of their definition," says Walker. Nintendo told Retro that Samus does not actually take bounties for those she hunts. (Someone should tell Nintendo that Aran has officially been labeled a bounty hunter for two decades now, a slight inconsistency.) "So we started joking that Samus was actually a pro-bono hunter. And occasionally we'll run into those nuances of translation and culture that can sometimes derail us for days.""

I recall reading somewhere else in the interview that in Japan she was never even known as a bounty hunter, so I'm guessing whatever profession they gave her there (intergalactic space hero?), in the days of the NES they mistranslated it. Of course, this mistranslation has only added to Samus' awesomeness, but my original point was that we won't be seeing gameplay mechanics based around bounty hunting.

In any event she's more of a highly revered mercenary than simply a bounty hunter.

Which makes me recall that all main characters in Nintendo's sci-fi series are mercenaries or bounty hunters... Fox McCloud, Captain Falcon.

Actually, imagine a game where you got to travel around the highly satirical super-hero universe of F-Zero as Captain Falcon, tracking down baddies in the Blue Falcon and hauling their asses to the authorities for some jail time.

I my mind, that sounds pretty awesome.

Shes obviously not about the money.
But she has to make a living, and Id like to see her have to hunt down specific rough elements.

I dont see what the problem is with it myself. I think it would fit into the existing play mechcanics quite well...in fact, for the DS game, they almost did it anyway.

Lets have it spread out over many planets in a solar system (with some you cant get too at first, of course). Major upgrades can be found, as normal, but others also purchased.

Give it an Elite-esq structure where you can freely explore, but also sign up for missions and get rewarded for completing them.

I think it would particularly suit a portable game well.

I really loved Metroid Trillogy, but I do think something new needs to enter the mix for next time.
And some actual bounty-hunting could well be it.

Also visor ideas;
a) Electromagantism (you see pysdo-field lines surrounding where furious objects are, and where intense power is flowing).

b) The whole light spectrum (I think this could be interesting and *may* work, but I'm not sure. Actualy have a visor you controll to see specific areas of the light spectrum. Effectively this would be like a hybred of the xray visor, infer red, etc. I think it could be used for some puzzles beyond just seeing what you cant normaly).

c) Augmented Reality visor - Basically an enhanced scanvisor that lets you see stats and data as you are shotting, overlaid onto the field of view.
For example, if you have previously scanned a creature, this visor would then show its health hovering above it.
You could also get other forms of virtual data to help guide you, instruct you, or even just giving a backstory to the area. (building plans showing what a ruin used to look like, for example. So you can see what areas you have to look to find something when the instructions where pre-destruction).
