Sonic to appear in Mario Galaxy 2? We're pretty certain they're joking. Probably.

NGamer magazine has tweeted "inside knowledge" that Sonic is to appear in Nintendo's upcoming Mario Galaxy sequel, currently scheduled for release later this year.

The guys at NGamer later tweeted this news came from a "trusted source", and that Sonic levels will take place in the "Green Hill Galaxy", after Sonic's own regular Green Hill Zone locale.

Imagine Sonic riding Yoshi... nope, we couldn't either.

The UK magazine is well known for its sense of humour, and its hard to believe Nintendo would want or need Sega's mascot in the latest Mario title. Ninty does not need the extra hype for the game - such crossovers are surely best contained within spin-off titles such as Mario & Sonic at the Olympics or true ensemble pieces such as Smash Bros. Brawl.

Still, it's an intriguing concept, and one we thought we'd report to you to enquire your feelings on the subject. Would it be a good idea? Or is it best left what it most likely is - a NGamer columnist's wet dream?

I quite like the idea of a brief parody of a Sonic world in SMG2. They could get away with it as a seperate planet as well. The design of the levels will be important though, as for me they would need to designed like a Mario level as opposed to a Sonic level, which I suppose is a given anyway. I wouldn't want Sonic to be a controllable character, there would be the obvious comparisons with the Sonic 3D games, which I feel Nintendo would blow out of the water! (well a decent camera would automatically do that anyway!)

The chances are there. Sega is already losing its grip on the gaming industry so sonic can be saved with nintendo's help. if we will benefit from it... i dont know. personally i think both company's should remember where their core business is. to be fair. Nintendo just should take over sega and continue the multi platform games from there on. But in the end Sonic should stay in his own game and so needs mario.

Hmm, if at all true, this could be interesting. Its not like Sega are any good at making 3D Sonic games anyway

Years ago this would have been 'explosive' news and most likely an April Fools Joke. But today? Even if it is true I wouldn't be that surprised or bothered....as long as they just keep it to one galaxy/planet.

mascots are all about money and sonic is very unlikely to add any value to a mario title, so why bother. they're also very unlikely to be sharing their flagship game with a rival company!!

The screenshot with Yoshi running on this half-pipe thing could very well be repaleced by Sonic. Apart from the fact that Mario is riding Yoshi, I cant imagine Mario on Sonic, that would make the game 18+!!! Reggie said that SMG2 will be for the hardcore gamer and for the loyal fans, so I think that this could very well be true. Imagine Sonic running around on a Rainbow Road-thing Galaxy, with Green Hill elements... I will buy this game anyway though...

I reckon this could actually work. I don't usually like gimmiky apperanced, but considering Mario's rivals are esentially Bowser, Wario and Sonic it seems to fit - especially since there can be a Sonic "Galaxy". It would also work better since this in esentially the 1st Mario Galaxy +; if it was the first Mario Galaxy I don't think it'd fit as well, sequels are far better to expand in such a way rather than the original games. I actually kind of hope the story is true - so long as they don't over gimmick it.

there is one way the Nintendo core could accept this and that is to make Sonic a "2nd party" character. From a business standpoint that would make sense since the people still interested in this blue hedgehog own Nintendo platforms (that includes long time SEGA fans and curious Nintendo fans who got into Sonic from SA2B) Nintendo is the only company operating under the brand name policy. Sonic is viewed as old news everywhere else so the only way for its mediocre (at best) games to sell well is to stick to the only company who can STILL sell a 2D platform at retail price (Wario Shake it being another example of course)
