News: WiiConnect24 Is Running

Posted by Franklin Hughes - Nov 19th 2006 01:25

Gaming site Kotaku have uploaded video of the Wii Channels after they recieved their first update courtesy of the WiiConnect24 service.

Kotaku have uploaded these videos to their Youtube account, which show off accessing the "Shopping Channel", downloading a virual console game (Donkey Kong) and SD Card Management. Oddly enough it seems to take some time for a Virtual Console game or Game Save to copy to a SD card.

Very nice interface. That's my first impression, I'm sure they'll iron out small things like the speed issues, hopefully.

This looked nice. But they have to fix the copying, it was way to sloooow.

it seemed like the 19 block copy was just fast enough to stop someone clicking cancel. i wonder how long 190 blocks would take?

It's worth mentioning that this was the first time he used the service, it may only take that long the first time. I'm definitely not worried either way.

oh yeah, like how games boot up faster after the first time they're turned off.

I'm assuming part of what takes so long with the data-copying is some sort of encryption process, that prevents you from sticking that SD-card into a friend's system and just copying all your VC games onto it.

Good to know that it's barely been released in America or hasn't even been released yet, and they've already got updates. The Wii start up screen being renewed in the update pleased me, because the health and safety screen was just poor.

Lovely download screen for DK aswell.

POD: That's actually a good idea, never thought of that but they would need to do something like that so VC games aren't copied and "pirated"

2 minutes is a long time, but some SD cards are slower than others, generally cheap cards are slow, more expensive ones are faster. so maybe they just have the cheapest card they could get.
having non Wii data on the card (I assume that is possible) could also slow the process down

Guys, I've just been on a forum where people are claimimg that they've changed VC games on their PC's already to work on other machines. It's not an entirely reliable source, but sounds likely to me.

Definately need to add a time remaining counter.

Looks nice, wouldn't be surprised if, with more forthcoming patches, the interface got even more jazzed up. Maybe themes related to your Wiicade choice, like a Donkey Kong theme.

The layout and the clean-ness of it all is impressive.

However, i think the presenter needs to take a lot of credit. I think its difficult to keep the audience listening to you, or to keep talking during something so boring as a loading screen.
Hats off to him.

Yeah, he actually made watching a loading screen interesting... heh. Don't know why he wasted his money on donkey kong though...

Donkey Kong is a fine game; but yes- he was really fun. Didn't talk under his breath, didn't mutter, was really self comfident. Nice man.

fierce link and ajikan - i can't remember anything the presenter said - it's wii damn it - if there's a wii video of a loading bar i'd watch it all day.

That slowness is really gonna start narking me off after a while. I was surprised that the copying was even slower than the downloading, has the wii got a really slow SD write speed or something? I just wonder how long it is until somebody manages to break the VC console.

nintendo is pretty conscious about loading times - i'm sure they are as long as they need to be.
