News: Red Steel Sequel Is Planned

Posted by Fierce_Link - Nov 28th 2006 21:05

Ubisoft advertise for game designers to work on follow up.

Although Ubisoft have not outright confirmed any information about a possible Red Steel follow up, they have advertised for senior games designers to take part in the "Red Steel Project."

Ubisoft has a job posting on their France website, which asks for a Senior Game Designer who will take part in “the continuation of the Red Steel Project”. Interestingly enough, the job posting asks for “RPG” experience, which can suggest RPG elements may be used in the Red Steel Sequel.

A trademark was also made by Ubisoft in the United States of a game called “Fighting Steel”. Of course the name could be anything, but it’s great to know that if a sequel is on its way. Ubisoft can finally get some strong development time and effort in making the next Red Steel much better.

When can we expect confirmation on this from Ubisoft? Nobody knows, especially in the world of videogames. Developers and big players like to remain mysterious for various lengths of time. Incredibly annoying, but it also adds to the fun.

We'll keep you posted about any other news regarding a Red Steel sequel. Meantime, why don't you have your say below?

An RPG with real time fighting that isn't boring. That would be great.

I think if they fix up the control and such, the sequel could be very good. They just need to listen to criticism from the first one, and act accordingly.

Let's hope they do it right next time.

I'm just thinking about what they might call it. :P Red Steel II? Or Black Steel? :P

I hope they take the good parts from Hybrid Heaven (N64 game by Konami) and add better refinement of the control system which seems to be the achilles heel of Red Steel. Not sure how else they could make the game, but however it is done I hope it ends with a stellar game. I really hope Ubisoft becomes big enough to fight off the EA influence (they were a little short from getting the majority of stocks from Ubisoft).

From that, it looks like it might be called "Fighting Steel".

Also; first comment. Yay.

I'm with Tphi here, while i still plan to get Red Steel on launch and the idea of a sequal sounds good, this better not take away from the revival of Beyond Good & Evil

Different development teams. You need to keep an eye on what the makers or Raving Rabbids are up to first...

I'd love to see BG&E 2, but you know Red Steel could easily be a masterful franchise on the Wii. The first game, from what I have read, shows a lot of promise and is certainly looking in the right direction.

from reading the reviews (and having never picked up a wii) i was surprized that this game managed to screw it up - it was so high profile and it looks embarrassing for them so have such a mangled game.

if i made this game i would just remake it with controls that work (even if they have to stick with that bounding box ign always talks about) because the other parts seem to hit the mark that red steel was aiming for. oh, they should also do proper cut scenes - not ones that would look crap on a DS.

Maybe it's a DS version which comes in RPG form

"Maybe it's a DS version which comes in RPG form"

You may actually be right. I never thought of it that way.
It doesn't say what platform this is for. We're assuming it's Wii, and we have every right to assume that. However, it could be DS, it may even be 360. :/

Actually Dringo (from the old SR forums, right? Good to see you're still around!) when I met one of RS's designers in Paris he was telling me how he'd worked on BG&E. All from that same studio. BG&E had the makings of a brilliant franchise and certainly there is more story left to tell. And who wouldn't wanna use the Wii-mote to attack with Jade's battle stick? Controlling her camera with the Wii-mote would be easy-as-pie too..
Come on Ubi!

A second chance to win over the critics...? Why not. I hope this time Ubsisoft fixes all the problems talked about and make a game that truly lives up to the early potential.
