News: Wii Shortages Hit Norway, Portugal

Posted by Tom Phillips - Dec 7th 2006 13:31

Norway to recieve as little as 1000 Wii consoles, and Portugal 4000...

We've heard word from Norwegian N-Europe reader Aleksander Skofteroed that Norway looks like it will suffer a serious shortage of Wii units. Even the big videogame stores in the country's capital Oslo are receiving a smaller amount of consoles than expected, with only 1000 Wii consoles spread through the whole country.

To be fair, the country only has a population of 4.5 million people, though it is still expected that even many who pre-ordered will be left waiting when the Wii launches at midnight tonight.

Update: N-Europe reader Telmo Couto has contacted us saying that there is a similar situation in Portugal, where he's found that in there will be "only 20 Wii consoles to more than 60 demands in one store and 35 consoles to 150 demands in another", and that according to a local GAME store manager, the country will only initially have 4000 Wii units available.

Stay tuned for the latest, we'll keep you posted.

We have exactly the same problems here in the netherlands, and we're a 16,5 million people country, so Nintendo are truely screwing this one up.

Judging by the reports we are going to have much teh same problem in the UK.
4 retailers have already charged my credit card so I hope HMV, Woolworths, Argos and PC World can keep to their side of the agreement!

I don't see how Nintendo are screwing this up, the demand is high. Look at the DS drought in Japan.

So you get your Wii a little later then expected. Some of us aren't getting one at all (damn pre-order cancellation).

At least nobody has been shot to death over a Wii yet...

So if Norway and Portugal are getting screwed, Ireland are sure to get raped.

Nintendo should've produced more Wii's. They've known for months the demand would be this high.

To be delivered to your address or Collect @ store?
The online side of PC World, the delivery bit is not actually apart of PC World so i wont know whats going on unless you did collect @ store then i will but if the stores have short stock you cna bet the online part will have even less but its based on a first ordered first get basis so the earlier you ordered the better the chance

I'm WELL annoyed. Pre-ordered in October and Woolworths have said they haven't got enough accessories to send out my pre-order. The reason: nintendo haven't produced enough...How annoying! They had time!!!

Anyways, I'm going hunting at Tescos, Asda at 12 tonight...Probably will come away empty handed. It FRUSTRATES me how some stores have broken the street date and popstars etc are all getting Wiis when it's the lifelong Nintendo faithful like myself who aer going empty handed.

Not impressed.

This could have something to do with the fact that Nintendo have sold the LEAST for the past 2 generations.

Do you think it's in Nintendo's interests for the Wii to sell out? Does it increase demand? Isn't it a bit like the Tellytubbies saga?

I checked my play.com order, and it hasn't been despatched. Is it usually left this late, or am I screwed? I ordered on september 18th...

Nintendo obviously want to make as many wii's available as possible, if they could meet the demand, then be sure that they would.

I am also very annoyed that nintendo faithful like you and me can't get one at launch, but what can you do? It just shows how nintendo have done well with the wii, and that can't be a bad thing for nintendo faithful.

BBC news 24 have just played a slot on telly saying all Wii consoles have sold out across the U.K. None are now available and even Game and Gamestation have only delivered on roughly half of their pre-orders.

Lots of people at my college were talking about the Wii UK ads today and my folks were saying I'd be lucky if I got it on time. I can NEVER remember this happening to NOE.

Hopefully Western developers will actually notice the sales and support the system in the long run. Looking at the DS however; that's debatable..Not meaning to sound cynical folks.. I'm just down that I aint got a new 'tendo console on launch date for the first time ever!

Why does a smaller country like Ireland get 7 times more consoles than Norway?
Ajikan Says:
December 7th, 2006 at 14:09 || Total Comments: 107
Higher demand? I would have thought a lot more people were interested in games in Ireland than Norway.

In Nintendo's statement about shipping Wii consoles the following was stated:

"There are many hundreds of retailers across the UK who do not take pre-orders and as such will have stock available from launch," a spokesperson said.

Who are these stores? Do they mean the supermarkets? That's all I can think of in regards to no pre-orders being accepted.

Looks like the numbers were wrong. I read about a chain of stores in Norway that sold 1300 Wii's in just one hour. The total number of consoles are probably at least the size of Ireland

Ajikan: Why do you think Ireland has more demand for the consoles?

If anyone lives in London and is near Kensington High Street PC World, im going in today for some extra hours, the rumour from my stock man colleague is we may get two or three Wii's so if we do and you live near i'll be nice nad hold it back for you.
though there prob be gone by the time i get in.

Oh and just to make a statement, the Dreamcast had great starting sales.... and we all know what happened to that none the less, the first few months of a consoles life and how well it sells really dont amtter to developers, they like to see a constant steady stream over time.

The retail chain I work in (owned by UK DSG), did sell about 400 consoles only in the greater Oslo region, and 45 of those sold in my store. Nationwide we have 100 stores, but many of them are smaller. We sell all kinds of electronics, but many retailers i checked out who live by selling videogames only, got between 2-14 consoles. I think actually my chain got "many" consoles compared to competitors.

But I'll have to wait to the next shipment, roumored in week 50, since employees did not get to buy Wii. Everything to the customers...
