Charts: Latest Japanese Software & Hardware Sales

Its all DS dominance leading into Christmas in the week ending December 17th.

Courtesy of Media-Create, we have the most recent sales figures from Japan.

Software sales on the week were notably in favour of the DS once again as holiday spending starts to kick into full gear in Japan (expect numbers to peak around New Years as opposed to Christmas week). The Pokemon were relentless, and all indications point to Diamond/Pearl blitzing the 4 million mark before Christmas. New Super Mario Bros. is primed to follow shortly after - it would be no surprise if the Bros. reached the milestone through the New Year holiday.

In terms of new software, Sega's action RPG Fuurai no Shiren had a solid debut for a more niche series, underlining the DS' increasing ability to generate respectable sales on the strength of its install base - likely a crucial factor in landing the system Dragon Quest IX. Fuurai no Shiren is not completely unknown to westerners...the recent release of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon offers a similar gameplay structure.

Hardware sales were relatively unchanged save for the PSP jumping several slots on the chart. For all its percieved shortcomings, Sony's portable stab has actually yielded (and continues to yield) decent sales month after month...but the achievement has simply been utterly overshadowed by the burgeoning cultural phenomenon that is the DS. What to watch for in the coming weeks: just how sky high DS Lite sales will reach, and how many Wiis Nintendo can provide for their home market over the holidays.

The weekly software numbers follow:

No. System Title Publisher
1 DS Pokemon Diamond 123,473 Nintendo

When the DS first launged it only did reasonbly well, then at the start of the new year PSP starting selling more units, until around about February/ March time. Hopefully the same will happen for Wii.

Phew.. Glad to see that the PS3's sales are as high as WiiSport's.

Btw, are people not buying the Wii because of lack of units or because they don't want to?

^Lack of units. If there were more available sales would be far higher.

Though (hoped) so. Even in Iceland demand far succeeds supply, but I wasn't sure about the rest of the world.

"Though (hoped) so. Even in Iceland demand far succeeds supply, but I wasn't sure about the rest of the world."

It's pretty much the same everywhere.
There's no way you could ever have enough units for launch to satisfy everyone. Unless you stockpile units for like....years or something.

The question is: can Nintendo keep churning these units out fast enough?

Think about this: If production of the DS lite was slower, would we see sales figures like these?
Probably not. You need to have the units to sell them in the first place. Sure, the world and his wife may want one, but if there's only 10, that ain't gonna satisfy anybody. :p

True, if people check the store once for a Wii without success and then check again with similar results- they _are_ going to look for alternatives.

Alternative to a Wii..

"I couldn't find you a wii for christmas.. so I just got you a real baseball bat, tennis racket, boxing gloves, golf clubs and oh yeah a bowling ball.. for about the same price.."
