News: Wii Sales Near 1 Million Mark

Posted by - Jan 9th 2007 18:54

According to Japanese Magazine Publishers Enterbrain, Wii sales have almost reached the 1 million unit milestone.

2006 was an all-round great year for Nintendo. The DS sold strongly in Japan and Europe, and they launched their new home system, the Wii.

We're barely into 2007, but it looks like Nintendo are already nearing the 1 million sales mark for the Wii in Japan.

According to Enterbrain's survey, which covered 3500 stores, 989,118 Wii units were sold between console launch on December 2 and January 7.

Phenomenal numbers so far, but how is the competition doing? Are sales neck and neck with the Playstation 3?

Hmm, not quite. Whilst Nintendo have had problems supplying their new systems to retailers, Sony have also had this problem too, but on a somewhat bigger scale.

After the release of the system on 11th November, and after many, many stock shortages, sales are around 466,716 units. However, we expect sales to rise once Sony are able to meet retailer demands more easily.

Positive way to start the New Year, now lets just hope they can keep churning out systems to retailers.

Estimates of 1.8 million in US, 1 million in Japan and how many in Europe?

So thats 2.8 for those too regions.

Europeans sales can't really be that far off a million either. I'm finding it very hard to find a Wii in stores, and online is pretty much the same story, too.

Wii is still well sold out! I reckon vgcharts 4 million figure is probably right.

According to GameTrailers news there aren't actually shortages of PS3s in the US and there are still quite a few in shops.

i think we have to wait until the smoke clears for this one. sometime over the summer when the shops are all stocked up properly and there's no excuses anymore.

^^^ Exactly. Though 4mil Wii's - there are only around 10.4million 360's in the world. If Nintendo can ship out 8-10million Wii's this year, then I think that all three consoles could be about on an even keel...

Though Microsoft's estimates of 13-15million xbox's sold by June this year is a bit optimistic if you ask me... thats basically 3-5million in America and Europe, assuming they're considering Japan a lost cause.

Kurtle, PS3's are widely available across the USA, no joke...

This site tracks availability of hot items across the US. Go there, click on various regions and then click on hot items at the top. You will see that many retailers have available PS3's in every region. Wii's on the other hand are barely available. This is very surprising but true.

Hey you forgot that the DS kicked ass in the US as well!

According to vgcharts.org, who base they're sales on numbers sold as opposed to shipped, the Wii has already done 4million while the 360 is at 8.34million, that's incredible for the Wii considering it isn't even 2 months old yet.

There's PS3 systems on sale in the States. I saw some stores saying they had them (like Fry's had PS3 bundle deals), but it seems like the system is not as hot as people make it out to be.
I didn't see any Wii systems though, or any controllers and other accessories; all sold out.

Hmmm. I'm not surprised the Wii is selling well, just look at all the adverts Ninty are showing. This is excellent compared to the GC ads which were hard to find

Yeah, the ads are great, except...when i was waiting on launch day that zelda trailer kept coming on and taunting me! I have to admit though, all of the work nintendo has put into making the Wii the most sought after console this time is fantastic. I have loads of non gamers at work coming up to me daily and asking when the next shipments are due in (i know a guy at gamestation) and want one because they played it at thier relatives house at christmas/new year.
