News: Nintendo To Offer Original Game Downloads?

It is being reported that Nintendo are developing a system that will allow independent developers to make games for Wii download service.

It is being reported on gaming website C&VG that Nintendo could be offering some downloadable form of original content for the Wii in the future.

An interview with Game Informer with a Hudson Employee allowed rumours to surface that Nintendo could be "developing a channel that will allow users to download games."

When asked if Hudson plans to release any original content through the Virtual Console, Lee responded: "Well, the VC was specifically designed to bring back classic games, not to introduce new content. So to answer your question specifically: No.

"However, in the future, you should rephrase that question to: Are there any plans to launch original content on some downloadable service on the Wii, and you might get a different answer."

After these events had taken place, C&VG then contacted Nintendo and received this response:

"Nintendo has developed a programming system that will allow small independent developers to make games for Wii download service.

"We cannot confirm at this time in what format the new content will be delivered, but in the future there will be original games available for download through the Wii Shop."

In the past, Nintendo Head Satoru Iwata talked about such tools which would allow low-cost production games for Wii. We'll bring you more information on this as soon as it breaks.

Nintendo should offer downloadable content, like new Wii layouts? That would be awsome.

I remember Nintendo talking about this a while back when the Wii was still the Revolution, will definetly be good to see some new content coming to us soon. New levels for existing games would be good, like what they where planning to do with the 64dd.

Considering they have the infrastructure, they should start putting demos up for download.

Yes, we have been told about this for some time. The only question is whats taking so long?

360 has original games to download, even PS3 does as well. Dont get left behind, Nintendo.

When this finally gets up and running, we should see some really interesting games. The Wii is relatively easy to develop for, and with the fact that the wiimote opens up a new door for creativity, I cannot begin to imagine what kind of games we'll be seeing.

If I'm not mistaken Matt and Bozon from IGN said that they're working with an unnamed developer to bring a game to the Wii VC service.

With all their talk about pushing new content onto a Wii through WiiConnect24 a download system like described here is a no brainer. I'd actually be shocked if Nintendo wouldn't go ahead and do it. On the other hand, it's still Nintendo and they've made quite a few awkward decisions in the past.

I'm having a time over at WiiCade.com, but a service for games made specifically for Wii? Well, I should be an aweful person to refuse such an offer!
