Adult content can only be downloaded after 11pm in Europe on Wii U because of German law

Gamers were furious earlier in the week thanks to a new rule on Wii U which only allows you to download adult content, such as ZombiU, after 11pm in Europe.

Many people were confused by this rule as other consoles don't enforce it and Nintendo have a robust parental control feature on Wii U that can block children from downloading, or even viewing, content on the Nintendo eShop.

It seems that this isn't Nintendo's idea though, but instead German law. Nintendo Europe is based in Germany and that's why the law must be obided by.

"At Nintendo we always aim to provide a safe gaming experience for fans of all ages and ensure that we comply with applicable legal age restriction requirements across Europe.

Legal age restriction requirements vary across a number of European countries. Since Nintendo of Europe is based in Germany, Nintendo eShop is complying with German youth protection regulation which therefore applies to all our European markets. Under German law, content rated 18+ must be made available only at night."

Sadly it seems there isn't much that Nintendo can do right now to rectify the issue but you'd have to be intoxicated at 3 in the morning to justify purchasing retail titles from the eShop at their current inflated prices.
