Arguably Nintendo's best title at E3 earlier this year, the company chose tonight's Nintendo Direct broadcast to show off a bit more of the third-person shooter Splatoon, with a focussed look at the single player campaign.

Fresh from the minds at Nintendo's EAD studio, Splatoon is a shoot 'em up with a difference. Playing as a humanoid-squid hybrid, you have to blast up both opponents and territory with your paint gun, but you can also travel through the stages - including up and down walls - by swimming in your own ink. Think of it a bit like Call of Duty meets de Blob.

The E3 showing gave us a look at the frantic team vs team multiplayer action. Tonight's trailer shows off some of the crazy stages in the game's single-player campaign.

Splatoon is due out in the second quarter of 2015.
