News: Children & Female 3DS Ownership Increasing

The Nintendo 3DS is in the hands of more women and children following the price drop and introduction of a pink variation.

Nintendo has previously admitted that when the Nintendo 3DS was first launched it was primarily purchased by males in their late-teens or early-adulthood due to the cost of the system and the games that were available. In recent months the company has been working hard to expand the audience and it seems to be paying off.

In a Q&A with investors company president Satoru Iwata cites data obtained through Club Nintendo and claims that the Nintendo 3DS has become increasingly popular with female and young audiences. Mr. Iwata claims that this is due to the decreased price point and the introduction of the pink colour variation, which is due out in Europe on November 18th.

Some interesting trends are evident thanks to Club Nintendo information. Mr. Iwata notes that with all Nintendo 3DS colours other than pink The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is the most commonly purchased title. However, when people register a pink 3DS, of which approximately 75% are female, most of them also register a copy of nitendogs + cats. Satoru Iwata also states that Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle is often commonly registered alongside pink 3DS units. He notes that increasingly children are being given a Nintendo 3DS as a gift and believes that this holiday season will see a huge surge of sales for the console thanks to the lowered price point.
