News: DSiWare Not Transferrable To 3DS?

Reggie Fils-Aime stresses that Nintendo's current approach to downloadable software does not allow for transferring content, but might change in the future...

Nintendo have not thrown strong enough support behind downloadable services on the Wii and DSi, claims boss man Reggie Fils-Aime, speaking to Kotaku recently. Letting third-party developers take the reigns instead, Nintendo have also held gamers to quite a simplified and strict service compared to that of its competitor's - the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Marketplace.

Currently the service is a "device-based approach", confirmed Reggie. "The content is tied to a particular device. Until we move to a different type of an approach like an account based approach you're not going to be able to transfer the content. We are looking at how best to bring that to life." Bad news for those hoping their DSiWare purchases could be taken with them when upgrading to the 3DS.

But change may possibly be on the way. Reggie conceded that the company needed to do better with its downloadable services, commenting that in the future "we will have more content, have it be more easily discoverable. We will make it engaging and a much bigger piece of our overall business."

When will this occur? Reggie concluded it would "need to be on a new device, like the 3DS."
