News: Japanese Gamers Surveyed About 3DS Price Cut

A survey of Japanese gamers finds that nearly one third of 3DS owners feel "anger or regret" over the price cut.

Nintendo's surprise announcement last week that the 3DS would see a price cut in all territories resulted in a myriad of reactions from all fields. While shareholders began selling stock and some gamers looked forward to the Ambassador scheme it seems not every gamer is happy. 4Gamer spoke to 6,488 readers about the 3DS and freelance journalist Daniel Feit has translated the results.

Of those that answered 93.5% were male and roughly 50% owned a 3DS console. Of those who did currently own a 3DS over 30% felt that the offer of 20 free games did not go far enough to placate their "anger or regret" at buying the 3DS at a higher price. A percentage of people also stated that the free games did nothing to increase their appreciation of the console, suggesting Nintendo may have a long way to go to please gamers still.

The feedback wasn't all negative however as a third were willing to recommend the console "provided you like 3D or the games currently available". Moving onto the games the survey found that 21.7% were not interested in Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land, while 24% weren't sure if they'd buy either, 28.2% said they "definitely" or "probably" buy both while 14.7% of respondents said they would probably buy at least one of them.

Just under half of the 3DS owners asked said that they felt that not enough games were available and they were disappointed with the console and the promise of future games did little to help. Of those who did not own a 3DS 5.4% said they would buy one when the price was reduced, 42.1% said there were no games they wanted and 15.3% said they have no interest in purchasing the console regardless of price. When asked about Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land 60.1% of those without a 3DS said they weren't interested, suggesting Mario doesn't have as much clout as he used to. When asked what consoles they "want the most" 65.3% said they are interested in the Playstation Vita.

3DS owners were also asked about the Wii U and 25.8% said they would buy the console "early" and 17.6% said they would wait a while in case it drops in price like the 3DS did. 21.3% of respondents said they were undecided as to whether or not to buy the console and 26.7% said they were not planning on buying the Wii U at all.

Obviously this is just a relatively small sample of gamers with a specialist interest in video games, as opposed to more casual shoppers, but it does provide some insight into the responses the Japanese fans have had to the 3DS price cut.
