News: Reggie Says 3DS' Issues Are Fixed

Key Nintendo franchise? Check the box. Connected experiences? Check the box.

While early pre-orders and initial sales for the 3DS were set to make the machine a record breaker sales soon petered out. Nintendo of America's president Reggie Fils-Aime spoke to Kotaku about the problem and said he believes Nintendo has solved the two big issues many fans felt were a problem with the console.

According to Mr. Fils-Aime Nintendo spoke to consumers and they said two things: "I need a big Nintendo franchise for our purchase. The second thing was I need the network to be up. I need the connected experiences to be there." He believes Nintendo has now addressed these issues and claims this should help encourage sales.

When the 3DS launched earlier in the year its biggest titles were Super Street Fighter IV 3D, Nintendogs + cats and Pilotwings Resort which, while all good, were not big Nintendo franchises that usually shift systems. Reggie Fils-Aime pointed to the release of The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time 3D in the last week as one big Nintendo franchise that should encourage people to purchase a 3DS.

Nintendo's line-up for the rest of the year also includes a number of titles likely to lure in potential buyers. Super Mario Bros. 3D, Star Fox 64 3D and Mario Kart 3D are just a few titles that are likely to help boost the console's sales.

Another issues gamers at launch faced was a diminished online service. They were promised a web browser and the eShop in a later update, which arrived earlier this month, but many felt that these services should have been available at launch. Mr. Fils-Aime notes that this summer will also see the release of the 3D video service that will bring gamers 3D video content to their console.

Reggie Fils-Aime was quick to defend criticisms claiming that Nintendo had released the console too early: "The system did not launch earlier than planned. We thought there would have been a tighter gap between launch and the first network update."
