News: Super Mario Sees Sales Success

The portly plumber's latest Wii outings pass a couple more milestones...

In news unlikely to surprise many people, Mario is still as popular as ever.

According to Famitsu's latest figures, New Super Mario Bros. Wii has become Japan's best-selling console game since 1996, surpassing Enix's Dragon Quest VII and clocking up 3,894,356 units sold as of July 4th. The game released in the region on December 3rd 2009.

But that's not all, as Nintendo of America confirms that June's NPD sales figures have confirmed Super Mario Galaxy 2 to have passed the one million mark in North America since its May release.

The sequel - universally lauded by critics - shows predictably powerful legs, but so far has arguably lacked the pace of the original, most likely due to the 2007 blockbuster's holiday release. Here's hoping some strong, sustained advertising gives the masterpiece the push it needs to reach the deserved multi-million mark.
