Rumour: Monolith Not Working on 3DS Threequel?

Baten Kaitos and Xenoblade creator allegedly working on a 3DS RPG, which is a third entry in a series...

Here's one that's pretty hard to verify at this point, but it's too interesting to go unsaid. A seemingly faithful poster on NeoGAF has reported that the latest, hot-off-the-presses issue of Japanese magazine Nintendo Dream contains an interview with Nintendo-owned studio Monolith Soft, where the developer confirms that it is working on a new RPG for 3DS. We say new - the game is supposedly the third entry in an established series.

Monolith Soft should be solidly relevant in the minds of Nintendo fans - the studio's latest masterpiece, Xenoblade Chronicles, released in Europe just last week.

If the 3DS title is indeed the third entry in a series, there are actually couple of possibilities. Monolith has created two Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier games for Nintendo DS; the first never came to Europe, the second never left Japan. But the Gamecube's Baten Kaitos series also comes to mind - Monolith more famously developed those two card-based RPGs to critical acclaim.

We already know that Monolith is working on a Wii U RPG. The studio has been expanding rapidly lately, and has had the capacity to split into at least two development teams for some time, so hopefully it won't be too long before we see what the first-party developer has been cooking up.

Update: Now a conflicting account has come forward and stated that the newest edition of Nintendo Dream actually does not contain any mention of Monolith Soft. While it's more than likely that the developer will work on 3DS down the line, it seems this particular case was made up earlier this week. This is why we can't have nice things.
