Preview: StarFox Adventures

Back in the N64 days Rare showed us a game which they called Dinosaur Planet for the N64. The game supported superb graphics for the N64 but much was said about the game. Nintendo kept on pushing back the release date until it was knocked off the release date list. Nothing was talked about besides rumors of Dinosaur Planet coming to the new Nintendo system, Gamecube. Well those rumors were right, Rare announced Star Fox: Dinosaur Planet for the Gamecube. Nintendo fans were stunned when they saw the new footage of this beautiful game. After a name change to Star Fox Adventures, we saw all of our old friends coming back besides one, Falco. Nothing has been seen of him but I have a feeling that won't leave him out. Now on to the full preview of Star Fox Adventures.

Star Fox is usually in the air flying around in his Airwing but now he is going to take on a whole new adventure. Our good buddy Fox Mcloud is going to be roaming a huge, vast, and gorgeous world slapped full with dinosaurs and puzzles. The game is going to be based around the same gameplay as Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.

Here are some of the features we know of as of right now. Fox is going to be exploring a new and beautiful land environment with stunning water effects all over the place. Battle your enemies in the water, on the land, or in your Airwing. Use the same targeting system from the game Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. You will have all of the same features when you are locked on including walk, run, strafe, jump, and roll to out maneuver your giant enemies. Fight bosses that are hundreds of feet taller than Fox. Defeat your enemies with your shape-shifting staff. With the staff you can project blasts at your foes or even turn into different beings. You can also have control have your newest friend, Prince Tricky the triceratops. Also you will meet up with a girl names Krystal who will help you save the planet from the evil ruler. Fox will be able to swim through water, fly in the air with his trusty Airwing, and explorer the land by foot. The game will feature tons of puzzles to solve and many many enemies for you to practice your fighting skills. You will also have many character interactions with other characters in the game which makes it much more fun.

Roam a huge vast world with your sidekick Prince Tricky, who is with you everywhere you go. She is very handy to as she can distract enemies for you. The whole game is about trying to take power away from a new ruler named General Scales ( He is just one of the giant bosses you will have to outsmart and defeat ).

The play mechanics are much similar to Ocarina of Time may I remind you so, you will already know if you enjoy the battle system.

The story goes like this. Fox comes to this planet for unknown reasons but he soon find out that a evil dictator has taken power and with help of your trusty friends Prince Tricky, Krystal, Peppy, and Slippy you must take the power from the ruler of Dinosaur Planet. To make matters worse, General Scales has captures the pterodactyl princess from the land and Fox must save her also.

The control scheme is identical to Ocarina of Time, with a sometimes aggravating automatic jump system. Of course the game used the analog stick to maneuver Fox through this giant 3D world. The A button executes you attacks and the camera analog switches through your items for you. You can lock onto your enemies with the famous target lock-on that you got from Zelda and then you can maneuver around your enemies attacks. Hopefully will we see neat items such as variations of the hookshot and others from Zelda.

Well most of you are probably wondering what is the point of having a sidekick. Well you will get to boss Prince Tricky around just like many of you were hoping. There are many command such as "Heel" ( It will bring Prince Tricky back to Fox ), "Distract" ( This action will confuse the enemy and divert his attention to Prince Tricky and give you a chance to attack ), also there are actions such as "Dig" ( Tricky will dig for items ), "Play" ( I suppose Tricky will just play around and goof off ), and "Guard" ( Which Tricky will be on the look at for any sneaky foes who want to sneak attack Fox ).

The graphics are splendid in Star Fox Adventures. There is stunning water effects and smooth textures everywhere you look. Which you will be looking at a lot of this textures because may I remind you that the environment is huge. The land isn't just plain. We will see the land with trees, streams, rocks, and grass everywhere. Also don't forgot the pyramids and temples. Although most textures are smooth but some screenshots I have seen have had some jagged textures which I think Rare will clean out before they release the game. One of the nicest things in Star Fox Adventures would have to be the fur effects. The fur on Fox's body sways in the wind and looks so real. From what I have read, Rare is going to be pushing the Gamecubes hardware to the max for textures so I think they will have all the jagged textures out. From what I have seen of the game I think it will be one of the more better looking games out for the Gamecube. They have some of the best water I have seen, although I think Star Wars Rogue Leader: RS 2 may be a little better but still Star Fox Adventures will not be far behind.

Outlook:

Well since Rare has taken the gameplay from Ocarina of Time I am sure the game will have some astonishing gameplay. With the Gamecubes power and what Rare is doing with the games visuals. Put all of this together and you may have a game being capable of surpassing Ocarina of Time but only time will tell.
