amiibo and Smash Bros selling well in America, despite shortages

Nintendo of America has released the initial sales for its two big November launches - Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and its range of NFC-powered figurines, amiibo.

Smash managed a total of around 710,000 units when combining retail and digital sales. Added on to the 1.5 million units shifted for the 3DS version, it's safe to say that this generation of Smash Bros. has been the rip-roaring success we all expected it to be.

A much more unknown quantity was Nintendo's range of amiibo figures. The Skylanders-like models are designed to connect with a range of Wii U games, most prominent of which is Smash Bros. itself. Well Nintendo of America confirmed that they have sold around the same number of figurines as Smash Bros. Wii U copies - so just over 700,000. It probably doesn't hurt that they make pretty cool collectibles.

This success was despite consistent complaints (on both sides of the Atlantic) in regards to shortages of amiibo, especially the Villager model. Nintendo has denied that any model has been actively discontinued, but stopped short of promising that stock would be replenished any time soon. The best-selling figures in the US were Link, Mario, and Pikachu.

Smash Bros. has also had its tales of shortages, specifically the specially-made Gamecube controller adapter. Did you manage to pick one up without pre-ordering? Let us know below.
