Launch date: May 3rd - Staff opinions

So now it's official, the GameCube will launch in Europe on May 3rd with at least 20 games. What do we think of it? Read our opinions below.

Gerben - To be honest I think Nintendo is waiting way too long to launch their GameCube. We'll have to wait more than three months, and the GameCube launches almost 2 months after X-Box. May 3rd is 2/3 of a year after the Japanese launch. 20 Games don't make up for this. I'd have rather seen a March launch with 5 games than this.

Tim - The 3rd of May... man that requires us waiting for quite a while. I am glad to actually know the official date now, but I was hoping it would be in March. Gives me some extra time to save money... because I have to buy all the launch games! (20 games)

Gary - Folks, this may seem bad and in a sense they are giving a headstart to Microsoft but and there is a big but when it is launched there will be no shortages, big launch line up of games, far cheaper than the oppostion and there will be more quality games to come. When you really think about it the pressure is on Microsoft, they will have a month and a half to shift as many big ugly Xboxes as they can. It is by far the most expensive with the smallest amount of quality games. If they botch up the launch then they will pay a price. They need to have no huge shortages, you see I think that people will look at the Xbox then look at the PS2 and choose the PS2. So folks before you start cursing Nintendo, just think hard because the future is bright.

Javid - I think it's good that we now know when the wondrous GameCube is being released and can look forward to it as the day approaches. It will also allow us all to save up more money and as a result enjoy more games. As for the delay on SSBM, sure it's a bit of a blow, but come on, it gives us the chance to spend more time on games from the very broad release titles available till it arrives. As for X-Box, who cares!, so they have a month and a half head start over the Cube, they better use it well because when the Cube does arrive with it's very appealing price and game list, the X-Box will not be in a good position to compete with it. Trust me, Nintendo are playing their cards right for once. The time to get excited is now!

Jim - At first I was extremely dissapointed with the decision to release the Cube on May 3rd, 2002. Like Gerben, I was not happy with Nintendo. But I began to think about it and I relised the huge amount of launch titles that were on offer. 20 Titles! Even Sonic Adventure 2 Battle! For the most part I don't mind the wait, but I cannot help but think that Nintendo could have managed to make SSB: Melee and Pikmin launch titles aswell...
