New fighters, stages, amiibo, Tourney mode all confirmed for Smash Bros.

The 'mini' Smash Bros. Direct has just finished airing, perhaps setting the record for most new stuff announced in the space of nineteen minutes.

Firstly, let's get the headline stuff out of the way - yesterday's leaked trio of fighters proved to be true. Already announced was Lucas, returning from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The second new addition is back from Super Smash Bros. Melee - the firey swordfighter Roy.

Surely the biggest newcomer though is Ryu from Capcom's iconic Street Fighter series. The attention to detail by Sakurai's development team is something to behold, with his whole move-set tailor-made around the classic Street Fighter games. As you'd expect, the classic moves like Hadoken and Shoryuken are here, but you'll be able to pull them off even more powerfully if you input the actual button combos from Street Fighter II.

If you purchase Ryu, he will also come with his own stage - Suzaku Castle. But that's not the only new stage that is incoming. Announced earlier, the Miiverse stage will be available for free in an update for Wii U owners. This shows messages posted on Miiverse from other players whilst you duke it out. Also available right now is a returning stage - Dreamland 64 from the original Super Smash Bros.

Later down the line, Hyrule's Castle and Peach's Castle from the N64 original will also be released.

Ryu, Roy, and Lucas will all get their own amiibo figurines in due time, and there was also confirmation that - eventually - every single fighter (including the Mii fighters) will get their own amiibo.

There is absolutely way too much in the Direct to describe here, but one final mention for the online Tournament mode which will be available as part of an update in August. This will let you battle it out in both regular and community tourneys.

There's quite a few more little things in the Direct, including costumes straight from Virtua Fighter and Tekken, and trophies, so stop reading all this and just watch it all for yourself.

A final summary of the content that is available right now:

  • Ryu, with Suzaku Castle stage
  • Roy
  • Lucas
  • New Mii costumes - Splatoon, Mega Man, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Isabelle
  • Dreamland stage
  • Miiverse stage (Wii U only, free)
