News: Cave Story 3DS Releasing This Summer

One of WiiWare's finest gets a 3DS makeover this summer...

We waxed lyrical over Daisuke 'Pixel' Amaya's Cave Story when it finally hit European WiiWare at the back end of last year. One of the best 2D action games of recent years can be enjoyed right now for a mere 1000 Points, but maybe you want to experience some postmodern, shoot 'em up action with an extra dimension.

It was something of a surprise when NIS America announced they were to publish a re-stylised version of Cave Story on 3DS. One got a sense that the classic, NES-esque presentation of the original was part of what made it what it was. Regardless, the 3D version has received the blessing of Pixel and is due to release in Europe this summer.

With the game being free to play via a browser and at a standard downloadable price on WiiWare and (in North America) DSiWare, Pixel has moved to justify a retail price-point for Cave Story 3D.

"We've gone to a level of detail that probably is unheard of compared to what we did for the original WiiWare version. And now you'll see characters are fully 3D... The weapons are in full 3D, all the items, everything you see in the world has this level of depth that you'll be able to really utilise with the 3DS's stereoscopics."

Will you be picking up Cave Story on 3DS this summer?
