SEGA Announce New Era

It’s a return to form for SEGA as they announce a new era!

SEGA have been quite safe in the last decade or so, only utilising sure-fire success stories such as Sonic the Hedgehog, but they plan to usher in a new era of excitement and wonder akin to the crazy years of the Dreamcast.

At The Game Awards, SEGA revealed a trailer announcing the return of Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Golden Axe… “And More”!

All of these games are in development right now, and will each be released in the next few years.

Sega Chief Operating Officer Shuji Utsumi had this to say:

In recent years, Sonic the Hedgehog has forged new paths for SEGA, bringing the franchise to life and reaching new audiences in ways we had only dreamed of in the past.

Building off that success, we are digging into our legacy and reimagining several franchises to bring these games to more audiences around the globe.

Today's announcement is just the start of our initiative. The upcoming projects, spanning a range of genres, are currently in different stages of development and will release over the next several years."

SEGA haven’t announced what platforms these new games will appear on, but given their close relationship with Nintendo and the fact that sales of their titles tend to excel on Nintendo hardware, it’s incredibly likely that most, if not all, will make an appearance on the Nintendo Switch or its next iteration, depending on the time of release.

SEGA have launched a new website to coincide with this exciting announcement, as well as a newsletter that will keep you informed, which you can check out here.

We’ve already seen the seed of this new era in recent years, as Super Monkey Ball and Samba de Amigo, classic SEGA franchises that hadn’t seen releases in around 10 years, both made their return recently with Party Central and Banana Mania.

What other classic SEGA franchises are you holding out for? We here at N-Europe will forever be waiting for a return of our boy, Billy Hatcher.
