The Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise has been a surprising critical and commercial success since the release of the first movie in early 2020.

With Jim Carrey playing the role of Eggman in the first two films and the arrival of Knuckles and Tails in the second movie, what other Sonic favourites can we expect in this third entry?

SEGA and Paramount have released a teaser to get us in the mood for a shadowy third entry in the movie series this December, which you can watch below:

Fans of the Dreamcast-era games will no doubt have their ears pricked by the sounds of adventures past, as hints of the song ‘Live & Learn’ by Crush 40 can be heard in the short teaser.

In addition to the trailer, a welcome bit of news about the cast has trickled in, as Jim Carrey is set to return as Eggman.

After the second movie, Jim Carrey stated that he was finished with movies for the most part:

“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious.

It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.

I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

Thankfully the angels did their work and presented the Sonic 3 script to him in gold ink, as he will be reprising his role as Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog 3!

It's evident on screen, and has been from what he’s stated in various interviews, that the goofy and outlandish nature of Eggman really speaks to him and his love of wacky characters, of which he played many in the 90’s such as Ace Ventura.

IGN revealed that Krysten Ritter, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone will join the cast, though what roles they play has yet to be announced.

Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Lee Majdoub, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Tom Butler, James Marsden, and Tika Sumpter will all be returning for this third Sonic romp.
