Super Mario Bros Wonder Takes UK Number 1 Spot

Super Mario Bros Wonder released last week and debuted at #2 in the UK charts, under the PS5 exclusive Spider-Man 2. Despite this, sales of Mario’s latest title were still stellar, marking it as the fifth biggest boxed game of the year and the biggest 2D Mario launch in UK history.

The latest Mario outing didn’t quite surpass first week sales of Mario Odyssey or Super Mario 3D All-Stars, but did impressively sell above New Super Mario Bros. Wii. A strong debut for the UK market!

Meanwhile in Japan on its launch week, the roles were reversed and Mario took the top spot while Spider-Man 2 came out in second. Unlike the UK charts, we have specific numbers for Japan. Super Mario Bros Wonder sold an estimated 638,634 physical copies in its first weekend while Spider-Man 2 sold 77,348. This makes it the fastest selling Mario game on Switch in Japan, wow-e-zow-e!

Fast forward to this week in the UK and it seems Mario’s legs, the famous evergreen effect that Nintendo titles seem to have, are in full effect, as Super Mario Bros Wonder takes the top spot, pushing the friendly neighbourhood web slinger to second place. Super Mario Bros Wonder dropped 55% in sales while Spider-Man 2 had a 69% decrease.

Elsewhere in the charts, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume. 1, which we talked about last week, made its debut in 4th place. Sonic Superstars raced down the charts, from 4th to 15th, and Link still prevails as after nearly 6 months on sale, Tears of the Kingdom still hangs on to number 17 in the all-format UK charts!
