Preview: Scarface The World is Yours

"Shooting makes use of both the pointer function and lock on – which makes shooting specific body parts easier than it ever was before. This also massively helps with the driving."

Imagine if the end of the film happened differently. Sosa's assassins didn't manage to kill Tony Montana in the mansion, and Tony Montana managed to escape. However, in the process he loses everything. What does Montana do? Well, he starts rebuilding his cocaine empire once again. Scarface: The World Is Yours takes this "alternate ending" and puts you in control of Tony Montana and his foul language, together with the aim of becoming the "King of Miami" once again.

Scarface is a port of a year-old PS2/Xbox game, but has many enhanced features. The Wii-specific controls are the main upgrade for Scarface. Melee weapons are controlled by holding B (which stops the pointer changing the camera angle) and slashing the remote, which feels great, especially when chopping people to bits with the chainsaw.

Shooting makes use of both the pointer function and lock on – which makes shooting specific body parts easier than it ever was before. This also massively helps with the driving. Previously, aiming was done via a left analogue stick, which meant that players had to take their thumb off the accelerator in order to aim freely. With the pointer, that problem no longer exists.

The gameplay style of Scarface is similar to that of Grand Theft Auto games. You have free run of the city, and can do what you want. Gangs and cops will both shoot at you should you annoy them or break the law too much. You can take over parts of Miami by wiping out most of the gangs in each section and purchasing all available buildings. There's also a bit of "business management" involved in getting the right amount of cocaine to each part of Miami.

The graphics have been tuned up a bit for the Wii version, and while most of the models and the textures remain the same, the effects, such as the in-game water, have been given a polish over, and the game itself looks clearer. The game creates a believable version of 80s Miami, and includes real life places, locations from the film and some new fictional buildings.

You have a few metres to keep an eye on while playing. The balls meter is the main one that affects gameplay. You gain balls by shooting people in specific places, like the groin, and taunting after you kill them. The more balls you have, the easier the missions are. When the balls meter is full, you can enter a "Rage Mode". The game switches to an FPS perspective for 25 seconds, and gives you unlimited ammo. The pointer makes this more effective than in the previous versions.

You also have a heat meter for both cops and gangs. The hotter the meter, the more the police and gang member will attack you. You can cool the meters by bribing the gangs or cops. This adds to the important factor of managing your money.

Scarface: The World Is Yours looks like it will be a well-made port of a good game. It doesn't look like there is enough there to warrant a second purchase for those who already own the game on a different system, but for those who missed out this looks like the definitive version of the game.
