Review: TV Show King

WiiWare Review

"You use the Wiimote pointer to select your answer and you can also see what answer each player has selected, so for folk that are stumped, they can just pick the answer that their smartest friend has chosen. Good thing that the clever friend can change their answer in the last second to foil the cheaters' evil plans."

TV Show King is a WiiWare launch title developed Gameloft retailing at 1000 Wii Points. Just to clarify to folk out there, this doesn't cover TV show knowledge in case some people assumed it was a TV trivia quiz from the title. Instead it covers a wide range of topics such as geography, history, pop culture and even maths totalling the number of questions to 3000. You have the choice of playing by yourself or with up to 4 players using Wii-motes depending on the mode you pick, and each player selects which Mii they would like to use for the quiz.

This isn't a game for one person to play since they will find it a boring experience, unless you're trying to broaden your knowledge for a future pub quiz, but what makes the game is the multiplayer aspect and owning friends with your vast memory of general knowledge. So if you think you won't bother playing this with friends, or if you're a hermit, you may as well not get it. However, if you have friends and are somewhat popular, why not invite them round for a game?

Once you've picked your Mii, you choose the amount of rounds you want, being 3, 6, or 9, how much you think your head can take, then finally pick the difficulty mode from Normal, King, and Genius for the folk with an IQ of over 200. Okay that last part might be a bit of an exaggeration, but you get what I mean. Questions such as "Who succeeded Gael Abdul Nasser as Egyptian leader?" and "Which are the most dangerous insects?" will be thrown at you. If you can do all these questions then why aren't you in The Big Bang Theory or trying to get a girlfriend?

Now, let's have a look at what you could have bought with your Wii Points!

Now the show begins. Just like any other quiz show, you get introduced to the host with his stalker-ish smile and his broad-chested female partner that hangs about in the background. Then the players get selected 'randomly' from the audience and out to the stage to win some money. And if you're lucky you can see Darth Vader, Mario, Hitler and all the other crazy Miis you've created. Heck, you can even see the Mii cameramen at times as well. Now for those questions.

Once the show begins, you need to use your Wiimote to select your answer from 4 choices. The first person to select the right answer gets the most points, and for every other person that picks the correct answer gets some points as well, just not as many as the people that answered before them. One fault that presents itself straight away is how easy it is to cheat. You use the Wiimote pointer to select your answer and you can also see what answer each player has selected, so for folk that are stumped, they can just pick the answer that their smartest friend has chosen. Good thing that the clever friend can change their answer in the last second to foil the cheaters' evil plans. This will happen to a lot of folk depending on the difficulty you pick.

At the end of each round, players have the choice to spin a Wheel of Fortune to gain, lose or steal points. This wheel can make or break the game for players that spin it. Once you make that fateful spin with the Wiimote, you can end up with absolutely no points or donating some to a contestant, or if you're a jammy sod and have a lot of money already, you can gain more if you're lucky. Though if you're soaring ahead, it's best just to decline spinning the wheel. After some friend beating for stealing your points, you'll keep going through rounds and have different ways to answer, such as scratching panels to reveal an answer until you find the right one, or shining your Wiimote to highlight the answers, then eventually, you'll reach the finals. In the finals, the 2 best players advance where the first contestant to reach 5 correct answers will be declared the winner. Though this time, that damn cheater who's been hiding in your shadow copying you all this time can copy you no more, thus justice is served, and you answer the first 5 questions correctly making you the winner and embarrassing the sore loser. But they can always try and get a tad smarter by going through Quiz Attack to regain some self esteem.

Overall, TV Show King is fun with friends or family around, which is further enhanced by the usage of Miis and pretty colours, but definitely not one for people who play alone or worth the 1000 for playing by yourself. You'll have many laughs and chances to hit your friends thanks to TV Show King. You'll also find yourself self-hating your Mii and/or getting scared of the host's freaky smile and bushy eyebrow combination, which results in a satisfied stalker look. You have been warned...

N-Europe Final Verdict

TV Show King is a fun title that can be played in short bursts every so often. 1000 points might be a bit steep, but with other folk around to play, it's well worth it for a good laugh (though it could potentially end in the murder of said folk).
